I'm torn too. Very, very small sample size, but he clearly has talent. Is he still worth that contract If he starts shooting 30-34% percentages from three? Is he just playing out of his mind right now? I think the 4.5 million guaranteed over 3 years is right on the money, and that is what Dork Elvis has reportedly offered.
This is what I think. Tilman has no plan to spend Full MLE for the next 3 years due to repeater tax or luxury tax. To some fans: you are faithful. dont cheat yourself when you can treat yourself!
No, not completely loyal, but understand your team's situation. Is not a hard ask. What is House's value though? He's an undrafted guy that's bounced around the league. I think his agent is mistaken to think that teams are drooling at the prospect of picking him up. Look at the DMO situation...and DMo was a highly regarded prospect...who thought he'd be getting more and then what happened? He got less. Way less. And now he's out of the league. No one knows House's value...but I know his value will go down if the Rockets replace his value...and I think they can and will...with Gordon coming back and with Knight slowly finding his form...and Green random hot spurts...and always the prospect of a trade...he's not irreplaceable...he's not Capela or CP3. By this time next year my guess is we'll see that the Rockets offered him a fair contract and his agent got greedy. The Rockets don't lose here. They will always be around. Morey will be around next year. Tilman will still own the team. But where will house be? He'd be making more money on the first year of his new deal than what he's made his career. Sure, it'd be nice for him to get more but he has to be realistic with himself here. Him being an undrafted gleague guy means teams will be reluctant to pay him money and he'll always be on prove it contracts...meanwhile next year, if he does go through with this and doesn't accept a Rockets offer...he'll have to go try out for teams again...and compete against other hungry gleaguers and rookies who teams fall in love with. House is not the only gleague guy that plays well for a stint then is forgotten about. He had a guaranteed spot on the team, hell, IMO he had locked down that spot and it was his to lose...and he tossed it aside. I think he'll regret it, we'll see.
Then you remember that he is 25 and has had a hard time breaking into the NBA. Once you break into the NBA, you can generally sustain that momentum. Betting on yourself (KJ McDaniels, Isaiah Thomas, Royce White) doesn't have a history of always paying off. This is just gambling. Which stance you agree with more depends on your temperament as a gambler. Do you want to quit while you're ahead (aka, accept Morey's contract) or double down (aka, do what House is doing)? There's no right answer.
it's not like it's everyday that a gleaguer gets to play for one of the top 5 teams in the league - and be guaranteed a contract - during a championship window. house gambled and he lost. i mean... your the hometown kid playing with a damn good rockets team - he really wants the money i guess. well now he can go chase it next year.
Dude’s agent asking to convert two way contract to guaranteed contract for rest of season. Morey trying to lock him up with multi year non guaranteed deal..
House rejected a minimum offer. He will get a minimum offer this summer. He's got nothing to lose trying for more, anywhere close to what DMo gave up. Look at what McCaw and Allonzo Trier got in the past month, as RFAs and 2-ways. Look at what 2-way player Tyrone Wallace got after rejecting a House-type offer last year. Comparing any of this to DMo or Nerlen's Noel is at best, ignorance, at worst, active miscommunication and misdirection debating tactics.
The first bit is a fact for sure. I don't mind the Rockets sticking to their guns. Similar to forcing players to test RFA to set their value. I think the results have proven that Daryl and Co handle business better than any team in the NBA. Some players might not like it, but in the future things can get really, really sticky If you break from your principles. (Convert a 2-Way, RFA, Play in the GLeague, etc) When it comes to negotiations, there is way more leverage when you can walk in and you have a history of doing business a certain way. By now Daryl Morey has plenty of examples to reference to when he is talking to agents and the players themselves. I am not sure If House has been good enough to break our governing principles for future negotiations. For sure though, I am just as bummed as anyone on Clutchfans. I love this kid's game and I am dying to see him and Gary Clark developed together, especially knowing that our future picks are probably about to be traded. We NEED young talent baddd.
He might get a 2-year/7 million contract with a scrub team where he has to battle for minutes, but he won't be playing with Harden and D'Antoni in the Finals, making a name for himself, and potentially a MASSIVE salary. There won't be one team lining up to give Danuel House 30+ minutes and a starting job in a free flowing system, I promise you that. Especially If he wallows in the GLeague for the next year, and enters as a RFA. He has flamed out on multiple NBA teams already. He is giving up THE PERFECT SYSTEM and Coach for his game, and he may never find that again. (Just us Donatas won't)...
Not to mention that if he continues to flourish in rockets he will be primed for an amazing contract in 2 years that would wayyyyy make up for the chump change difference in any extra money he may potentially get this offseason (which I doubt)
He could make an Ariza/Tucker contract If he proved it for a couple years with the Rockets, while making 1st Rd Pick money. He could also have a couple rings.
The difference is this. McCaw was a drafted player and played for the Warriors and played in the playoffs. That's going to have a huge effect on what other teams offer him, these other guys were also drafted players and they are all making around what the Rockets offered, right? So it sounds like the Rockets offered a fair deal. I'm not looking at any of these deals and going...oh wow this guy is really getting paid. They are all making around 1.5 per year. Trier is on a team with cap space to waste that's not going anywhere, if House is expecting that on the rockets then I guess he'll go elsewhere. I compare it to DMO in this vein...they overvalued their own value...and they were both better prospects than House is. Teams got their own preferences and desires. I don't think anyone is going to value House more than the Rockets currently do. If it doesn't work out with the Rockets I don't see it as this guaranteed thing that he's going to just be starting elsewhere. I think it's much more likely that he's playing in Summer league trying to make another team. Those other teams will have no reason to be loyal to him (as the Rockets would have had if he plays in the playoffs and makes more of a name for himself) and could cut him for their own pet project. Look at how many players we cut so that we could keep Zhou Qi on the team. Every team, especially young teams and lotto teams, have these kind of players. The gleaguer to NBA playoff starter is not some common occurrence. He's looking a gift horse in the mouth here.
If it is about the money, I think his agent makes a correct decision. He can get 1-year 5 million dollars if he stays with G League. He is a very consistent player.
Now who's the one speaking about "imaginary worlds." Let me try your tactic, "Sure, in an imaginary world where Morey doesn't trade House, and House never gets injured, and he actually gets to play for Harden and MDA, it sounds great. Truth be told, I don't accept the premise in either case." How was that? Back to Facts...not speculation. Trier is the high end. The low end is Tyrone Wallace, who still got exactly what he turned down anyhow. McCaw is in between those two. One thing is for sure, he will NOT get a massive salary for 4yrs (at age 28) if he signs Morey's contract, no matter who he plays with. This isn't a DMo situation. This is that his current offer is the lowest it can be for 3yrs. And he can't sign a new one for 4yrs. Morey could trade him in this summer (kick the can) and he never gets to play with Harden again. House could get injured.
Our cheap owner is killing this team. Now I actually miss Les. At least he wasn't afraid to spend money.
BigBum, what are your friends saying about House's prospects this summer? do your sources know of any teams that are interested in House at this point?
