    Sports is a greedy business
Wow! Cougars any day over A&M to this Houston fan. At least he supports his home town school, even though he had to be a little egotistical and put his name on it.

Was that before or after he started playing the best ball of his career?

Best ball of his career on a team depleted with injuries and the system that gave him the chance to showcase his skills. Is not like he has not tried out and played with other teams.

Why unless he sits out a year?

    Ok.

I took a deep breath. Morey is probably doing the right thing. House probably needs to push his agents towards the money, because at 28 with 3 years of looking like a player next to Harden...his next contract won't be a question. But y'all are killing me with how Rivers is now a must-keep kind of player lol...

And the thought occured to me, guys come in off the streets, out of G Leagues, from wherever and look like potentially above-average role players but Melo couldn't make it work? Cut his ass.

You have such a small amount of time to make an imprint on the NBA, which will then get you paid. I fear that Danuel House is throwing away NBA starting minutes in the PERFECT situation for his game, and in a year's time every team in the NBA will have better options, and Danuel House will wallow away to China for the rest of his days. His one chance to impact the NBA and make a name for himself is RIGHT NOW. He is so damn lucky to be in this position with the injuries parting the red seas for him to shoot corner threes at will.

Another player that *should* be in the NBA is Donatas Motiejunas. In our system he was better than 50% of NBA bigs, and he murdered himself. You just never know If another system will fit you like the previous one. Danuel has found the system that perfectly matches his game. Absurdly risky to throw away high minutes on a championship calibre team, when you have been previously cut by the Phoenix Suns.

But again, let's not act like Morey hasn't offered him a contract similar to a First Round Pick, all guaranteed. That is more than fair for the 15 or so decent games House has given us.

He got his shot and took full advantage of it. He wasn’t balling out on the PHX Suns or some other trash squad. He was a productive rotation piece and even starter for a playoff team. Why not see if u can maximize that this summer?

You completely missed the point. People don’t like being disrespected, especially in salary negotiations. Initially offering House a three-year non-guaranteed deal after the way he’s performed as a Rocket is doing exactly that. The only reason Clint Capela stayed with the Rockets is the NBA’s RFA system gave him no choice. If he was an unrestricted free agent last summer, he’s playing for a different team with the way the Rockets handled his negotiations. As for DMo, Morey made him twist in the wind as an RFA, he finally signed a contract from the Nets, the Rockets matched the deal and traded him to Detroit two months later (rescinded because he failed his physical because of a bad back). Whether Morey was proven right about DMo’s NBA ability is irrelevant. On a personal level, he handled DMo’s contract negotiations poorly. If you are going to leave the player to twist in the wind for months in a contract stalemate, and the player gets a deal elsewhere, let him go to the other team. If you really wanted him back, things would’ve been hammered out much sooner.

Also, how does being right over a few million dollars helps the Rockets win games right now in the tightly-contested Western Conference?

Because If I am understanding all of this correctly, the Rockets own him. Teams aren't going to be able to offer him anything until the next FA rolls around, and even then he is restricted. I think it is pretty likely that is value could plummet, because how many teams in the NBA want to make Danuel House their starting SF? (Like None?)

Those teams are going to play entirely different too. He might never get starting calibre minutes again. THIS is his opportunity to make a name, IMO. He is surrendering the opportunity to James Nunnaly, who could turn out to be the real winner in all of this.

Call me crazy, but I'd take the 5 million guaranteed and leave a stamp on the NBA while doing it. When his 28th birthday rolls around, he could make 10's of millions.

For a couple weeks he has looked decent.

For a couple weeks James Ennis looked decent too.

OK, so you don't like Rivers. But wouldn't you like to have the whole MLE available this summer for someone (to include 3+-yr mins for 2nd round draft picks, another Clark, etc). Chopping into a $5.33m MLE to pay House this summer, sucks no matter how you slice it, vs giving him part of this year's MLE.

Is Morey refusing just so he doesn't set a precedence per Tim McMahon's tweet.
    • We can give House a 3yr $6.8m contract right now, and
    • Still afford to offer a 10yr vet $6.6m (non-prorated) on the buyout market...when teams like GSW are limted to $2.4m vet mins.

    Yes.

Daryl knows that there are several players out there that would thrive with Harden and D'Antoni, and it doesn't mean that you deserve a fat contract because you played decently for less than a quarter of the season. Danuel House is damn lucky he got the opportunity he did, as is Ennis, as is Nunnaly.

Even If he gets his 2 years - 7 million, he is throwing away $50 million not hanging around with Harden and D'Antoni for a couple years.

I feel like this is a huge mistake for him.

I love house but the bar is set really low for his replacement. That being a guy who plays defense, knows the system, and can hit a 3 every now and then. That's the bar for playing on the Rockets. It's not far fetched that the Rockets won't miss House much, especially with Gordon and CP3 due back. He should be trying to own that 3 spot and he's giving it away.

Capela signed with the Rockets because they were the ONLY team who made him an offer. Not because he was restricted, but because he had too many question marks about how valuable he would be to a team without James Harden on their roster. If anyone had thought him MORE valuable than the Rockets did, they would've signed him to a $20M/yr offer and dared the Rockets to match. The problem with that scenario is that if the Rockets don't match, you might be stuck with an athletic young big who can't hit a shot from further than 8 feet from the basket. That might have been worth something a few years ago, but not many teams look for that now.

Regardless of what Capela and his agents wanted and hoped for, they got what he was worth.

TL;DR: Capela re-signed with the Rockets because they are uniquely suited to maximize his value and consequently offered him more than other teams were willing to pay.

Wait, House would be a RFA this summer tho would he not?

Does it really matter if no teams would want to make House their starting SF? I mean, did we expect him to be the starting SF here after the trade deadline? I think many are expecting Morey to bring in a better wing player than House to replace him in the SL. I’m sure there’s teams that would like him as a bench piece, and he wants to see if those teams could do better than 5 mil over 3 years. I really don’t blame him.

My posts are based in logic and reason. If you don’t like that, ignore them. Also, sorry that I don’t bow at the altar of Daryl Morey. He does many things really well, but based on his track record, dealing with the personal side of contract negotiating isn’t one.

If I’m offered a job by an employer after acing the job interview and the initial offer is a non-guaranteed contract, I’m going to be pissed off/insulted to no end. Why that’s so hard for you to understand, I don’t know. It makes negotiations contentious, and when people get their feelings hurt, they often won’t consider other offers. Also, don’t act like the Rockets’ counter offer was that good. You are asking a 25 year old to lock himself into a low salary for the next three seasons, instead of giving him a chance to renegotiate his next contract sooner. Yeah, it’s great for the Rockets, but it’s not great for the player.

As for House’s ability to help the Rockets beat the Warriors, he did just that in Oracle in a few weeks ago. Furthermore, the Rockets need as many 3 & D guys like House to beat Golden State. Is Danuel House a superstar, of course not? However, he’s proven he can play at a high level in D’Antoni’s system alongside Harden. Now the Rockets have to hope Nunnally and others can do the same. It’s a major risk to take with how tight the Western Conference playoff race is and how banged up the Rockets are.

Lastly, it’s been mentioned in numerous other posts that Harden and House have become close. Getting the best out of James Harden means keeping him happy. Sending House to the G-League because of a contract dispute isn’t helping in that regard.

Morey struck out with Ennis. You make it sound like Ennis deserves to be in the same sentence as House. Having experienced failures in Ennis and MCW, Morey should give up and let MDA and Harden have their player now.
    • Since likely a 3yr / 6.8 contract does it, and
    • we will still have leftover MLE to sign a buyout for $6.6m (non-prorated)....which is ~$4m more than GSW can.
    • Maybe Morey is giving Nunnally his shot, and we pay House, if MDA doesn't like Nunn enough.
I can argue this player Lockout is needlessly shooting ourselves in the foot, just to make a point about precedence.

Why are you in favor of that, once you see the Math above?

Bingo. Just remove Harden and see what this kid can do...........yea that's what I thought....not a lot. He doesn't really create and he's gifted the ability to clean up and be WIDE open in this system. His D is respectable but I agree that it feels like a mistake, we shall see
