omg he played like a steaming blob of dogshit last nite. it's one thing to just miss shots or assignments, but completely another to get mentally beat down and scurred like a deer in headlights.

This might not be the right thread for rational, non-condescending conversation.

Capella was 10 of 12 from the charity stripe last night.

he had a tough night in the lane, but still ended up with 18pts due to actually making his free throws.

He sure as heck cant stay in front of anyone this year. Forget curry, Yao Ming would probably beat Capela off the dribble right now. Literally every player on every team we played has at least once beat him off the dribble. MDA and Jeff B aren’t helping by convincing themselves that keep switching him on perimeter is a good idea, even though they once admitted they needed to stop doing it and they did, and we started winning, but they have now gone back to it.

You guys criticizing Capela have lost the plot the guy is having a great year, sometimes matchups are going to force him to struggle a bit, BFD, the guy is worth every penny.

My problem isn’t one bad offensive night, my problem is with his defensive play. He literally has gotten beat every single time on the perimeter, and he is there a whole lot, probably more than he is in the paint when on defense. Part of is it MDA part of it is him. U saw a few games where his teammates would push him out the way to stop switching so much. For a player like harden it actually helps to switch, not for Capela. His perimeter defense was a lot better last year but he was also less heavy. Another thing more noticeable this season is that when he is guarding perimeter, he is guarding the opposing player sooo close so far out to where they can just blow by with one dribble. Lot of times he is out there all the way at half court guarding up so close as if the other player can just shoot a 3 from there, even with center and terrible shooters. As if he just completely forget all season people just blow by him.

Then stop switching him onto guards.

I think that's the plan in our defensive scheme because offensively we are volume 3 and FTs which are both greater than uncontested open 2pt layup. Way too many smart people involved including players and coaches so that's the only logical reason I can come up with his extended perimeter defense on small guards.

tldr; he plays D as instructed since we're okay giving up those shots because they way we play offense.

Well they did admit that at some point in season, when we were at the lowest point, that they had to stop or significantly reduce doing switching Capela out on perimeter, and they did, which is IMO what put us back on the right track. But they have since gone away from it again. I think it has more to do with trying to conserve his energy, but he showed in the games they stopped switching that he is able to keep up. So they did acknowledge the switching had to change, which shows they know it’s hurting them.

    they actually never stopped switching.

MDA didn't say they were not switching bigs at all. that they were going to adjust on a need to basis only.

I dont mind players beating him to the basket, what I don't understand is his work underneath the basket. I mean everything looks predictable, opponents know when he's about to raise or duck, its just predicable

He needs to figure out how to trick the opponent and not have every ball blocked or stripped away

I thought several times last night he missed clear chances to pump fake and/or spin against giannis and lopez. but he stayed predictable all night. just a bad night offensively for him, it happens.

By the way FTs aren’t greater than uncontested layups, neither are 3s ;) uncontested layups are like 99.9% makes. There is nothing more automatic in sports than an uncontested layup in nba. Not a penalty kick in soccer, not a extra point FG in nfl, not a normal flyout catch in baseball, etc

I used the term uncontested as a joke to how bad Clinty was in recovering. But in reality he's usually there trailing with hands up. ;)

Easier said then done. When the opponent big man spots up at 28 feet and the guard cuts.....now where are we?

You got Harden chasing smalls over screens. Good luck with that.
