I checked back to see if @Commodore would reply to this excellent point. Coward.

Everyone one of the Trumpers should have an answer to this point.

-wouid you demand a Republican controlled Congress give into President Elizabeth Warren’s demands in 2021 for 5 billion dollars to go towards free college for all when she refuses to sign off on a routine spending bill??

@Astrodome I look to you to give the most serious response here if you can humor me.

no, mainly they should do whatever gets them enough votes in their next election

This is a tad dramatic. The issues at play matter as far as who has political leverage. Federal pay for millions of workers vs a few billion for border security. Trump can argue both are important. Pelosi must argue that Trump's condition for federal worker pay (wall funding) is unacceptable.

Politically it just depends which obstinance voters think is more justified.

You are living in a fantasy. No one believes what you just posted except for you, and those like you. A distinct minority.

Actually, improved control of immigration/reducing illegal immigration has immense popularity with the majority of voters, and has for decades. But you wouldn't know it by listening to the Democrats.

I detect sarcasm in your post, but it actually is a genius move. The longer it is shut down, the better IMO. And I think the shutdown is popular with very many folks.

Anecdotal: I was in an adult beverage establishment the other day, and overheard this one guy who said he was with the Navy, and he said that he wasn't getting paid while the shutdown was in effect. Well, that's the risk you take when working for the government, at least the federal government.

Eh, small price to pay for the larger benefit of getting the government to stop its villainy, at least temporarily.

This is a partial government shutdown and the military is not affected. Their appropriations were passed into law last year.

LOL. You might be surprised, perhaps, at the rough and underhanded political moves that every President has had to make; and that anyone running for President has to make.

Hmmmm, strange. That's what the guy said in the store. But he didn't strike me as very bright, so it would not be surprising if he was incorrect. Or maybe he was just trying to get his buddies to pay for the alcohol. :D

No sarcasm at all. Trump has great "animal cunning", which ironically was the phrase that white slave owners used to use to backhand compliment clever runaway slaves.

But in Trump's case it describes him pretty well. He's sly in the moment but he seems to have trouble on sticking to a strategy. He could have worked it much better if he hadn't turned around right away and started acting like it was something shameful and blaming Democrats.

Just to add onto this: look at all the video clips of all the Dems, at various times until Trump came into office, pretty much saying what he is saying now (Bubba, Schumer, Hillary, Obama). They realized that the American public supports ending/reducing illegal immigration. The difference now is that the Dems perceive that being critical of Trump (for any reason) pays bigger dividends with their base.

But see now you're comparing Trump to a slave owner. Hard not to read between the lines. I would agree that has trouble staying focused.

No, actually if you really want to extend it out to a full on comparison, I was comparing him to a slave, which is why it was ironic. "Animal cunning" was a phrase to describe smart people of "inferior" races. Slave owners never had animal cunning because they were straight up smart white people.

I came to this phrase because I was searching for a phrase to describe the way Trump can seem really clever in the moment which I pointed out in this thread, but as Sam Fisher pointed out, looks less clever when you take the long view. I've been listening to a podcast on the Hatian Revolution which is why that phrase came to mind.

In the Frank Luntz school of polling, of course it is.

However, a wall, this wall especially, is extremely unpopular (because it is wasteful and ineffective) and a hill that is dumb to die on.

But that's what you get when you let Trump take over your party.

Dumb hills, dumb fights, dumb deaths.
