I’m also struggling to put in the 3rd pitcher, but if I take out one of them the valuation drops to 91 mil, which I think is just short of the 10% expected overpay. I think the 3rd pitcher would be the selling point to separate our offer from the others. That said, we should probably get something back to recoup the excess of about 6.7 mil.

I would rather give up Alvarez and one of Perez or JBB. Getting an OF/1B/DH is easier than pitching. We lost 2 of our starters in free agency this year and set to lose 3 more next year with Verlander, Cole, and McHugh. We saw this offseason the price of starting pitching with the Corbin, Happ, and Eovaldi deals. I'm comfortable with our offense in 2020 running out Bregman, Altuve, Correa, Springer, Brantley, Reddick, and Gurriel. We can afford to have a lesser catcher. I can't say the same for our pitching. We need some of our pitching prospects to stick in the majors. The best way to ensure that happens is keep as many as we can and throw them out there to see who can hang.

I think optics will be more important for the Marlins than the actual return they receive, if that makes sense. According to reports, they have already rejected some big prospects, in the name of greed, over the course of the last few seasons. I don't think they can pull the trigger on any deal without a premier prospect as the headliner. The Marlins' front office needs to show off a shiny new top prospect to their fan base, all 3 of them. They need to say, "we've acquired a top overall outfield prospect in the game, a kid we feel we can build around." When talking to the Astros, that HAS to be either Whitley or Tucker. Our front office, on the other hand, will continue to say no.

Although that's a really good trio of pitchers, I don't think the Marlins' front office would take that deal. And I have a feeling that our front office is quite high on Martin and Perez, so I doubt we'd offer that package anyway. I guess these are partly the reasons why Realmuto is still a Marlin. And I know the signing has been panned here thus far, but I am really glad we signed Chirinos early, giving us even more leverage, where we are not at the mercy of trying to deal with a completely incompetent Miami front office.

Good point. However, we still have Whitley, James, Valdez, McCullers.

You’re right though. It’s more likely we trade less pitchers away in a potential deal. 2 of these guys is probably enough pitching loss.

I also like that we added Chirinos early. It definitely gives us more leverage—or at least less of a desperate need to overpay for J.T.

I know the Marlins fans think they got pillaged last year and would love to rectify that with a headliner. I just don’t see it happening. Nobody is going to overpay for 2 years of Realmuto when they wouldn’t overpay for 3 years a year ago. Eventually the Marlins are going to lose leverage too. J.T. is ticked off and his timeline to FA shrinks everyday.

Whitley has yet to pitch an inning in the majors, James has shown signs but TBD, Valdez was Houdini getting out of innings with all the base runners, and McCullers will be on a pitch/innings count in 2020. None of them have thrown 180 innings in a season either.

If we are going to trade our pitching prospects I hope it is for a pitcher under multiple years of control.

A $62.7M valuation for Kemp and Stassi might be the most unrealistic thing I’ve ever seen on this message board. S4M, PLEASE reduce your post volume. It’s like conversation; verbalizing every thought that comes into your head does more harm than good. Apply a filter for the love of god.

I don’t want to continue the same argument about how I feel about the price tag on starting pitchers with multiple years of control. I’ll just point out that if u look at our last several years of activity on the pitching front, we have yet to make this type of deal. Pitchers are took risky long term due to years of bad mechanics. Way too many pitchers that have signed long term rich contacts and blew out an arm or at least suffered from arm fatigue that ruined their stuff.

I do fully expect us to add a pitcher, and I agree that our organizational depth is critical to our future. A lot depends on what the FO thinks of these particular pitchers.

Thanks for the thoughts on my proposal!

This kind of inane, worthless response is what I was referring to.

Yes, I agree. I ignored the inclusion of Kemp and Stassi, as I viewed them as just throw-ins.

The trio of pitching prospects for 2 years of Realmuto should at least pique their interest, maybe.

I just realized this site does have an ignore feature. So no worries, post away, I won’t see it anymore.

I hope a few more chose to ignore him also, that way I will not have to endure the endless whining and crying from people like you and Rileydog every time he posts. Scrolling through his comments is nothing after having suffered through the multitude of your inane trade suggestions.

    Astros get:
    RHP Mitch Keller
    3B Ke’Bryan Hayes
    OF Calvin Mitchell
    RHP Braxton Ashcraft
    RHP Travis McGregor

    Pirates get:
    SS Carlos Correa
    1B Yuli Gurriel
    OF Josh Reddick

Astros get to restock their farm, adding an elite young pitcher who may be able to make the opening day rotation. The prospects allow them to trade Tucker for Realmuto and a SP without blinking. They also clear payroll that allows them to sign Harper (or both Pollock and Keuchel).

Pirates add a controllable MVP candidate and 2 regulars that make them a real contender in their division, only giving up 2 of their top 8 prospects.

Tucker, Kemp, and Stassi for Realmuto. Sign Harper and Moustakas ($8M/1yr) and Gattis ($2M/1yr) and Diekman ($1M/1yr).

    CF Springer
    LF Brantley
    SS Bregman
    2B Altuve
    RF Harper
    C Realmuto
    1B White
    3B Moustakas
    DH Gattis
    Bench: Diaz, Chirinos, Marisnick
Rotation: Verlander, Cole, McHugh, Keller, James
Bullpen: Peacock, Perez, Diekman, Devenski, Harris, Rondon, Pressly, Osuna

Ah the inactivity of the offseason is tearing us apart. We need the soft soothing voices of the Tigers broadcast crew, am I right @Buck Turgidson
