Word was Astros didnt wanna go over 10 million. Wanted Cruz but have two other legs on the fire. Guess would be EE for Reddick and a Prospect or Nick Castellanos. Still In on Realmuto
Hamels and Verlander trades have nothing to do with this since there was no money involved. Beltran, Lee, and Johnson took the money. They may have said they had other priorities, but there was never any real indication that they didn’t accept the highest bid. Yes, it happens that players don’t take the money. But it’s rare.
You’re right, I misread your comment. Sorry. I thought you were saying Occam’s Razor suggested that Cruz was motivated primarily by something other than money. But you said Occam’s razor suggests there was a reason for Cruz’s signing other than WINNING, and that’s true. Occam’s razor also suggests that reason was money.
I thought SFG offered Lee more money, but that Lee preferred HOU because of his ranch? I did a quick search and couldn’t find a concrete offer, but seem to recall SFG offered more...maybe I’m wrong.
Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor. This guy Occam. He had a razor. And nerds talk about it. Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor. Hey guys, do y'all Occam about Razor? Occam's Razor.
Exactly - you said money and winning. Yet in both cases, they money was the same and they preferred something besides winning. Except offers only come if the player is interested in the team. Johnson might have gotten more money from a team like NYY, but if he told them early on that he wanted to play near home, then they would never have gotten to the offer stage. There was never any indication Randy Johnson considered anywhere besides Arizona - and Houston made an offer since he was already there, but it was never really considered either. He chose neither money or winning - he chose home and then got a fair contract due to mutual interest. Lee and others were similar.
Similar to how they addressed C with Chirinos, if Houston wants to sign a pitcher to gain some leverage/insurance, Brett Anderson, Jaime Garcia, and Clay Buchholz are 3 guys who should sign for less than $10M who I think would make decent BoR SP to eat some innings. Wade Miley is also a candidate but I think some team will overpay him. The rest of the market: BoR or lotto guys who should sign for under $10M/1yr, but should get a big league contract: Shoemaker Gonzalez Miller Perez Pomeranz Holland Santana NRI candidates: Fister Liriano Karns Tomlin Hammel Hellickson Colon Gallardo Estrada Jackson Shields Santiago
I think the NRI will be more important for Houston this season, since they have 3 roster spots on hold until they can employ the 60 Day DL. I expect them to bring in 4-5 NRI pitchers, and for at least 1 or 2 to make the roster. Hopefully they can uncover a gem, or at least a cheap player who can be a stellar 8th man in the bullpen.
Where would u put Marwin in lineup? Platooning DH and LF with Brantley? I would love to get Marwin back something like 3 years/21M.
So you are seriously OK with a LF/DH that has an OPS in the mid-low 700's? Marwin is not a good hitter. He's good enough given his versatility, but it's something we no longer need. We would be paying him for just his bat. It really astounds me how low an opinion people around here have of Tyler White.
I’d much prefer White over Marwin as far as a bat goes. At the same time, I’d like to find an upgrade over White, if possible.
