https://reason.com/blog/2018/12/26/will-trumps-stubborn-demand-for-wall-fun Will Trump’s Stubborn Demand for Wall Funding Keep the Government Shut Down Forever? No, but it’s nice to fantasize. Scott Shackford|Dec. 26, 2018 12:30 pm President Donald Trump is declaring that the federal government shutdown will last until he gets $5 billion for his border wall. "I can't tell you when the government is going to be open," Trump told reporters on Christmas. "I can tell you, it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it. I'll call it whatever they want." Trump said many of the federal workers who were furloughed told him to keep the government shut down until he gets his wall money. He also claimed on Twitter to have handed out a contract to build 115 miles of a border wall in Texas, except the president doesn't award construction contracts. The Associated Press noted that Congress approved funding for 33 miles of border wall construction in Texas earlier in the year, and that might be what Trump is referring to. The "great price" Trump claims he got for that contract: $22 million per mile. shutdown affects about 800,000 of the federal government's two million employees. Some have been furloughed, while others are still working without pay until the shutdown ends. The shutdown is the result of a failure to fund several agencies because Trump wanted $5 billion for his wall. Nearly $1 trillion of the budget for fiscal year 2019 has already been approved. But among the agencies that haven't been fully funded are the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, because Congress will not agree to include the $5 billion Trump is demanding. As always, when the government shut downs, media coverage seems to focus entirely on people not getting paid and national parks being closed. This coverage creates the impression that the only thing the federal government does is pay hundreds of thousands of people to clean the bathrooms at Yosemite National Park. Trump is now trying to pin the blame for the shutdown on the Democrats for not giving him the money he wants. The Democrats, meanwhile, do not seem terribly concerned. If the only reason the government shut down is over spending that Democratic voters don't support (polls show that most Americans don't think funding a border wall should be a high priority), it's hard to visualize how this is going to hurt the party. If this shutdown rolls into January, when Democrats take control of the House, it seems very unlikely that Trump will get wall funding in 2019. But you can never be certain what lawmakers might agree to in exchange for some pork for the folks back home. The best outcome for fiscal responsibility would be for Trump to give up, and he might! But a face-saving negotiation seems more likely. Trump gets some more border security funding, but no wall, and House Democrats get some spending they want in exchange. Stay tuned.
Absolutely takes nothing away from the number of CBP and ICE officers. And as further proof you did not read the article, it clearly states that an “ineffective wall” is better than an increase in CBP or ICE. I get it, y’all hate Trump because he is white, but an increase and upgrade in border fence would help. It even says so in that article you posted — which you clearly did not read.
Please provide a quote from the article that says that. While you are doing that, here are quotes that support the article's title: "Why the Wall Won't Work: The legal, practical, economic, and moral case against Trump's border barrier." Hmm... odd you introduce an accusation of racism. But never mind, since I quoted the article (both title and direct quotes) that shows that "Why the Wall Won't Work", can you pull the quote that supports your claim that an increase and upgrade in border fence will work? I'll wait...
Like I said, you have no real opinions of your own. No wonder you must resort to Tweet dumps and posting "Reason.com" article. Enjoy your day, racist.
My friend works for the USDA's lending branch, and they are among those furloughed. Wonder how long before the benefits the government isn't currently able to provide will start to take effect.
So, in other words, you were either incorrect, or dishonest about what the article said. And as a result of being called out on it, you resort to a racism accusation. That's what I thought... but just wanted to make sure you knew it as well. I will quotes the entire second to last and last paragraph: "In a sense, the wall merely represents the Trump administration's worst instincts and desires. It is harmful, wasteful, and offensive, but an ineffective wall is nonetheless better than the surge of 5,000 new Border Patrol agents and 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to round up and deport people that the president also wants. No wall has ever arrested, robbed, battered, or murdered nonviolent people, as immigration enforcement has. A wall will not create an interest group to lobby for itself, endorse nationalist presidential candidates, and demand more power and funding, as the Border Patrol union does. The wall is more than a symbol. It will harm the lives of thousands of border residents and immigrants while wasting billions of tax dollars. But in a world run by nationalists, the one small source of comfort for non-nationalists over the next four years may be the knowledge that it could be worse." The author does not say a wall is better than hiring more Border Patrol agents. Its says a wall would be better than hiring agents to round up and deport people that the president wants to do. If you had any integrity, you would understand the difference. But you don't. Again, just wanted to point that out so you knew that.
My understanding that the Coast Guard is also impacted by trump's wall government shutdown... 42,000 Coast Guard members are the only military branch to work without pay during shutdown "For us to just be cast aside, this is hurtful. We put so much on the line every day," said Emily Garris, wife of a Coast Guard member and mother of two. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...members-are-only-military-branch-work-n952066
A guy I went to High School in the Coast Guard was just lamenting about them not getting paid on the 31st.
Funny thing about fences and walls - they aren't effective in keeping people out - as they find other ways in, but because they do make it more difficult to cross, they tend to keep people in once they get here.
I'm told that walls don't work, they are 4th century technology and people will just go around them.....and that's why we don't have walls protecting our embassies around the world.
How many thousand miles are those embassy walls? Is our Mexican Wall going to backed by a hundred Marines per mile, authorized to use lethal force?
Comparing a wall around a structure that's a few thousand square feet to a wall along a border that stretches for 2,000 miles is exactly the type of logic we've come to expect from you.
It wouldn't require that and I'm sure you know that. The purpose of walls is to outright discourage or to greatly slow those attempting to get past it. With an array of sensors and cameras you'd be able to monitor a large area MUCH easier than without it and it would make the job Border Patrol is tasked with considerably easier. If you see a group trying to get over the wall you could be dozens of miles away and still be able to intervene. Compare that to the job they have to do with no wall. I mean, even embassy walls can be breached, but the purpose is to give your people a chance and to buy them time. A border wall would be no different. I'm convinced that everyone knows it's considerably easier to defend a position with a wall from people on foot than it is to defend a position without a wall. DNC propaganda must be REALLY good to get people to ignore that obvious fact.
Do the Embassy walls block the local animals from reaching their water supply or close off their migration routes? Are they built across private land? Do they keep residents away from the recreational reservoirs? Are they built through canyons and over ridges? I beginning to think you just have no sense of scale. We've done this once before but where does the wall go here? How abut here: Where are farmers getting the water if you fence them off?
