https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...ies-run-with-a-few-more-moves-this-offseason/ Luhnow says in the video 2 days ago our targets are one more bat, a starting pitcher, and possibly a catching upgrade.
Nice vid. Jeff seems very determined to get some things done before the season imo. Whether or not anything happens remains to be seen. I think not winning it all last year has him motivated even more. Cannot wait to see what happens with the roster moving forward.
Well, I dug a little deeper after listening to the interview again. That interview occurred on Dec 13–before the Brantley signing. Now, Luhnow did mention still looking at offensive additions during the Brantley conference. That said, his focus on adding a bat might not be as strong as I hoped.
Use Cionel Perez, JB Bukauskas, Nova, Max Stassi, Tony Kemp, and maybe lower level guys to make 2 trades. Get Cervelli and Trevor Williams from the Pirates. Get Alex Cobb from the Orioles and get them to eat 5-8 million. Trade Reddick even if it means eating 5 million per year. Springer Brantley Altuve Bregman Correa Gurriel White Cervelli Tucker/Straw Bench Diaz, Chirinos, Marisnick Rotation: Verlander Cole Cobb Williams James Bullpen: Osuna Pressly McHugh Peacock Devenski Harris Rondon Valdez
.370 OBP in 4 of the last 5 seasons. His price shouldn't be too high because he's on his last year and owed 11 million. I think Cervelli/Chirinos make a good platoon. Cervelli gets on base more and Chirino has more power.
Cervelli has had a very up and down career. I just don’t see him as a big improvement worth the cost of a trade.
Williams is the big get in the trade I proposed. Pirates are trying to trade Cervelli. Cervelli/Chirinos is better than Chirinos/Stassi. I also like that it is only a 1 year commitment to Cervelli. Realmuto will cost more in prospects and Grandal will strain our budget for 3-4 years.
Got it. Yeah, I don’t like Trevor Williams much either. He doesn’t produce much swing and miss stuff. Last year was his first decent year and I think we’d be overpaying for him as a result.
After the Corbin deal, any starting pitcher with multiple years of team control is going to be an overpay.
Yeah, I’m not interested in pitchers with multiple years of control. Use our farm for that. I’m interested in the Verlander’s and Bumgarner’s who push us over the top.

Bumgarner won't be available until the deadline. Just to put it in perspective.... Williams had a higher WAR than Morton and Keuchel. I'm just throwing names out there that MIGHT be available. I don't know who Luhnow and company will target.
I just don’t think they will deal him without getting that 1 guy they view as a very high ceiling prospect. I think guys like White and Kemp have more value to a team much closer to being good. If a deal got done without Tucker (no way Whitley is moved) then I think Bukauskas and Alvarez would both be involved. Don’t get me wrong as an Astros fan I’d be all over that trade
I think they would PREFER they got guys like Tucker or Verdugo or Andujar. However, the market for 2 years of J.T. doesn’t seem to be there. The Marlins have been asking for too much since last offseason; their demands are going to have to come down to the best offer available unless they want to get stuck with an unhappy Realmuto.
