    On a separate note.

Trump really is a terrible deal maker, 5 billion wouldn't even be enough for his wall. Earlier in the year he wanted 20 billion for border security with like 15 billion going to the wall...funny enough, the Democrats and Schumer were prepared to give that to him in exchange for protection of the DACA kids. He didn't take it because once again the hard right started whining and screaming to him about amnesty... and Trump thought he could just scrap the policy (The SCOTUS determined he can't) so now Dems don't even have to put that on the table...but realisitcally, the dems can 'cave' while getting something out of this and Trump will have gotten 5 billion on his wall...when earlier in the year they were ready to give up more! The best part is that again, is 5 billion enough for his wall? No. Not as he promised, it would just extend the fencing we have there and some of that cost would go to replace what we have there...

I thought he was a good deal maker?

In case anyone needs to be refreshed...

THE ART OF THE DEAL...talking your way into getting 20 billion less or perhaps...nothing at all...

No, it is in defense of using the money already proposed to be allocated to border defense in a smarter way. The President turned down the offer of the money and chose to shut down the government instead.

What is currently being done at the present rate of funding wouldn't qualify as "doing nothing". And in fact, if there had to be a choice between accepting only current measures or shutting down the government, accepting current measures is far superior in my opinion.

Last I check, GOP control the house, the senate and the Oval Office... at least for a few more days. I’m sure he will get a better deal in Jan.

    By who? Poncho Villa?

( Even without a wall I think the 20,000 troops at Ft.Bliss could handle it)

Steve Hayward puts things into perspective:

About the “government shutdown,” a few questions and observations: Are the police and fire departments in your city still on patrol? Will city hall and the county courthouse be open for business next Wednesday after the Christmas holiday is over? Will your local public school open up again after the holiday break? Then “government” isn’t really shut down now, is it? If you count all the way down to local mosquito abatement districts, there are something like 50,000 government units in the U.S. Only one of those units is “shut down.”

And the federal government is not really shut down. Are your Social Security checks still in the mail? (Yes.) Is the military still on watch? (Yes.) Is the IRS still withholding income tax from your paycheck? (Yes.) In fact, funding bills for much of the federal government were already passed in recent months, by way of the normal budget process that Congress seldom follows any more. Who is hurt by this partial government shutdown? Mostly bureaucrats. Who are overwhelmingly Democrats.

So let’s see if I have this straight: Trump holds out for modest funding for a border barrier, and the Democrats’ refusal to give it to him means thousands of Democrats will go without paychecks, and will have their ongoing mischief against the American people put on hold for a few weeks. What’s the downside here? If Trump is really as good a negotiator as he always says, he should now up his wall funding demand to $10 billion, and raise it $1 billion a week for every week the Dems hold out.

So, apparently the partial government shutdown is not a big deal, now that trump and republicans caused it. All for a wall, or steel slats with points on top. To stop a shrinking problem that can be better solved through increased hiring of border patrol agents and increased use of technology.

The other main takeaway... that $5.7B is a "modest amount". So good, lets better spend that modest amount for something that will help Americans...

More better ideas on how to spend this "modest amount"...

the federal govt spends $10 billion/day . . . so yes $5 billion is modest in proportion

So better to spend it on something with significant benefit to people than waste $5B on a wall that won't. Especially when you know (1) it won't only cost $5B and (2) there will be on-going costs that aren't part of that $5B. I posts three such lists.

And next time anyone comes to the government asking for $5B they can point to your argument of it being such a "modest amount."

I keep repeating "it's not about the wall." It's about Trump and Schumer having a pissing match.

Except that it isn't. Schumer approved of a bill that would allow money to target border security. Trump rejected it. That isn't Schumer doing anything wrong or any type of pissing match at all.

It's about Trumps narcissistic ego. He was fine with the interim bill until Fox and Friends called him a coward.

There is a clean CR on Trump's desk.

There is not a wall funding bill.
