they don't actually profit financially. their profit comes from the satisfaction of making society healthier.

The economic evaluation for the production of fruit juice from the american grape in the south western part of America was evaluated using the NPV (Net Present value) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return) methods assuming a uniform cash flow over a 10-year plant life. Sensitivity analysis was conducted by varying the number of production days (330, 300 and 250 days) at 100% plant capacity and varying the plant capacity (100, 85 and 70%) for a 330-day production schedule. Some components of the operating cost reduced with number of days and plant capacities. The production cost and product cost per unit increased with either plant capacity utilization or the number of days. It was observed that product cost/ 500ml juice at 85% and 70% stood at 0.1 USD while payback time/profitability percent had better index at 300 and 250 days compared to 330 days of plant operation. The results further indicated that the plant should not be operated for less than 250 days and plant capacity utilization of 70% in the year. Flexibility in the plant capacity utilization in the range of 70%-85% for 330 days shows a good economic performance as well as result of the NPV and IRR for this operating condition.

They get washed, just like your tomatoes, strawberries, etc....

The FDA/USDA has an "acceptable level" of byproduct (i.e. bugs and twigs and whatnot) in all of our stuff: grains are some of the worst. They do test for it also, this just one reason why food safety/quality regulations are a pretty cool thing.

    Frozen grapes>Grape juice

Grape juice is trash. The standard Welch’s has more sugar than soda.

Grape prices vary between $100 - 1000 per ton based on quality and type. Each ton of grapes is 500,000 grapes, so maximum upstream, wholesale cost may be around $1.10 per bottle. Obviously mass market, consumer-tested juice products are cut using water and all kinds of additives and preservatives with varying costs, but that may be cheaper in bulk.

All real fruit juice is full of sugar. People do need a bit of sugar here and there, you sexy thing.

Shockingly, so is fruit, you just consume less of it in a sitting (I believe it is eating 8 oranges versus drinking 1 glass of oj)

I live near (I think) the biggest Welch's factory there is.

Indeed, there are lots of grapes grown near me. I may even start growing them eventually. Pays well, I hear.

Also, 550 grapes is not that many. Especially when Welch's requires it's grape growers to bring like 16 bunches of grapes in just to test the sugar content to make sure they're sweet enough.

Also, I have met many of the farmers and other people working in the factory. Welch's is actually a decent company, from what I hear.

Just so were all clear... The grape juice concentrate is slightly diluted grape fruit concentrate?

    It's concentrated grape juice.

Don't think too hard about it.

    Less water = more....

there's a difference between processed sugar and the natural sugar you get from fruit.
I don't know why people think that just because it has sugar in it it's bad.

I get that. Just amused to see that the ingredients for grape fruit concentrate are filtered water and grape fruit concentrate.
