Average Annual Value, this is what you use to calculate CMT versus payroll.

This prevents back/front loading of contracts.

eta: @Rockets12 "Benefits" are exactly what they sound like. Non-salary stuff like hotels, meals, medical care, whatnot that are in fact counted as "pay" for salary purposes.

The standard for all clubs right now is $14.? million, it changes a small bit every year.

The only numbers that are in question are the players going into arbitration, everything else is solid. There's a known range on that too: MLBTR says 48M, they nailed it within 2M last season, on the low side I've seen 40M and on the high I've seen 50 this year. I'd trust MLBTR as a guestimate, as far as that goes.

Nope, the Astros have discussed Tucker with teams but it has involved top shelf starting pitching. I asked specifically.

The Astros have not discussed Whitley.

The Astros have discussed Gurriel but there isn’t much interest around the league. Hopefully his wrist is 100% and he gets some of his pop back.

Actually, looking at the roster resource page you are using, the benefits and pre-Arb salaries are also estimates.

I would like to have been able to see the entire 2017-2018 breakdown to know how these #s differ from last year. We obviously had higher payroll last year compared to where we currently sit.

Ok. Must not have liked the direction of the conversations, since our focus seems mostly on DH and C.

Yep, as I said. They will be within a couple of hundred thousand plus or minus. Not enough to change the compass.

Can you account for why our estimated payroll is higher than last year according to RR, when our estimated salaries are significantly less than what we had under contract last year (even including the pay raises)?

No, only you can go back to my original post, around 6 PM, and add those numbers. Once you do that, you can come back and ask specific questions, ok?

    Show your math.

I kept seeing tweets about 2-3 teams in serious discussion and “some other teams could get involved”. No chit Shirley. It’s the same 10-12 teams that have been talking to Miami. These Realmuto trade rumors are getting old and annoying as ....

    Guaranteed Contracts: 99.3
    Arbitration Estimates: 48
    Pre-Arb + rest of 40 man: 8
    Benefits: 14
AAV adjustments for Altuve, Verlander, Rondon, Smith, Yuli: 9.9

Which of these is wrong? You can start with the first figure, please. Show your math.

Baseball reference's link doesn't account for 14 million or so in player benefits, and contracts appear to be dollars paid and not dollars for tax purposes.

Baseball reference has 137 million + 14 in benefits + 16 for Brantley + 14 for Altuve salary difference for tax = 181. That isn't precise as only adjusted the big salary difference, but more or less matches Buck's number.

So if they really only have $20-30M left to spend, I don’t see how Cruz makes any sense, as he would eat up more than half that mount. They have GOT to add a pitcher and they need to keep at least $15M set aside. Unless they’re confident they can offload Reddick. For me, the moves would be:

    $25M to spend:
    Offload Reddick: +$10M
    Sign Grandal $64/4: -$16M
Package JBB, Kemp, Stassi, and 3rd tier prospects for a MoR SP, taking on <$10M (Gray, Stroman, Sanchez, Ray, Fulmer, Bundy, Cobb, Duffy, Leake): -$9M
Sign cheap/NRI RP (Diekman, etc): -$1M
    Remaining for deadline moves: $9M

    Opening day roster:

    CF Springer
    LF Brantley
    3B Bregman
    2B Altuve
    SS Correa
    C Grandal
    1B Gurriel
    DH White
    RF Tucker
    Bench: Diaz, Chirinos, Marisnick
Rotation: Verlander, Cole, TBD, McHugh, James
Bullpen: Peacock, F Valdez, TBD, Devenski, Harris, Rondon, Pressly, Osuna

Optioned: Stubbs, Reed, Davis, Straw, Fisher, Rodgers, C Perez, Armenteros, Deetz, Guduan, Abreu, 4 open spots for callups and optionable waiver claims

60 Day DL: McCullers, Martes, Smith

Thanks Joe Joe. Well, if I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. I still don’t see how we got to these #s based on what we’ve lost, what we’ve gained, and what has increased. I’d like someone to be able to unpack this and see if we can figure out why.

Is the Altuve salary bump the difference? It’s the difference in the approximate 40 and 27 we are discussing. That would make sense.

If this is it, I was wrong. We only have 20-27 left to spend, without cutting some salary.

I don’t see us paying 16 mil to another C. Going after 6.2 mil Realmuto is one thing, dedicating another 16 towards a catcher is not.

I think we are probably offering some combo of major and minor league parts to the Marlins, giving them OF upgrades and high quality prospects.

I think with about 20 mil to spend we pay 13 to Cruz, cut 13 via Reddick in a move for Realmuto, add 6.2 in Realmuto, and ship some mid-level prospects to the Diamondbacks for Greinke, while requiring them to pay down some of his salary.

Or we could take Chen from the Marlins as part of the Realmuto deal, instead of Greinke.
