[Long-winded Rant] South Africa: An Omen For America?

Yeah except false equivalence... big difference when it is a government stomping its own people. You are trying to use my words against me by changing the situation. Also the land was not stolen by them. They were legally given that land. You are mad if you want justice for something that old. That is like me saying I should be given UK citizenship because my ancestors were forced out on a boat. At some point, we have to admit you cannot hold a modern person accountable for the crimes of their fathers and forefathers. Go ahead and justify the racial hatred and oppression taking place with that sick logic.

Also land is rarely stolen. Usually it is lost in war. Ie my native american ancestors lost to my european ancestors. I guess I owe myself an apology for what my european ancestors did. Maybe I owe reparations to myself. While my distant UK and French relatives owe me something for pushing my ancestors out. Boohoo. We have to move on. This is a clear use of hate and illogic to justify revenge on the children of people who are long since dead. You are a bad person if you support this.

 

This thread would make more sense if there were over a billion native Americans still alive in North America.

 

Listen these "farmers" whose lands are currently being taken away need to move on. What has happened happened, it's time for them to stop pointing fingers. It's all in the past. They shouldn't act like victims. History is littered with people who's lands were taken away, shall we go back and restore everything? Till when? It's not realistic. The people who have taken these lands away have changed already, they're deeply regretful now that they see how miserable it's making the ex land owners and they promise to stop taking lands away in the future. They want to come to a deal but the ex land owners are so angry and resentful and borderline violent, it's impossible to do anything. Plus think of the livelihood of the people who now occupy these newly acquired lands. We can't disrupt that, it would be cruel.

Look at how many people in the world work hard and climb the ladder instead of focusing on problems. Similarly, if these unemployed ex land owners were busy working hard right now instead of blaming others for their problems, they would be in a better position and wouldn't be so wrapped up in complaining about things in the past.

We all just want to move on you know.

Stop living in the past man. The future is bright. Going back and playing the victim does nothing but endanger stability that has been worked on for so long. Should we give Israel back to the Assyrians? Let's be realistic. These are pipedreams. There are families, industries and livelihoods on those lands which need protection. Several attempts were made to reach an agreement but none successful.

At this point we have to be cognizant that such people tend to act erratically. We should keep an eye on them and - without discriminating by race - ensure that security and due diligence in the country can locate imminent threats. A public discussion in the newspaper about how long these unemployed landless people are going to continue consuming social services without giving back to the economy would be prudent. You never know.

I think what would help things tremendously is if the new landowners collectively decided who should represent the landless people now. Then negotiate with that person in good faith. Miracles can be achieved with diplomacy.

I don't think you know the situation... the returning of land was something the Apartheid government started before they had to give up their power. Claims were then being made that "Hey, I had this land before it was taken from me because of my race, I'd like to have it back now..." and the government was GIVING LAND BACK to particular people.

It was never a "If you're white, we are taking your land." it was a "If your land was acquired during apartheid then you just may have to give it back."

Since Apartheid was oh...you know...24 years ago...a lot of these people are still alive...so miss me with that 'forefathers' junk.

It's funny the things people will excuse based on the skin color of those doing it and the skin color of who it is being done to. The South African government is basically an alt right government, make Richard Spencer black and he'd fit right in with them.....and we have people here defending their actions. Yikes.

The native South Africans had no legal recourse.

also some Mexicans kept their land which people under apartheid could not.

Show your paperwork and go to court. Otherwise they are taking land from people who were there ages ago. You are misrepresenting history. They are changing their constitution to steal land without compensation from people who did not steal it from others. We don't have a time travel machine. It's all behind us. All the boys and girls just trying to make their way through life on those farms now. The unemployed landless people have access to a government which, while not perfect, is better than most 3rd world countries and willing to support them if they are willing to put their hatred and anger behind. Charities and aid money can be arranged to ease their problems. Sure there are elements of the government that are immoral, but those are fringe characters and most of the population doesn't like them either.

Stability is important. That area has been a cesspool of violence begetting violence. It's time to put the weapons and the death threats aside and just try to find peace. No more murders, injustice. No death camps. For the love of god all we want is peace and to not use brute force to achieve it. Why can't they just love each other and treat each other with respect now? What happened in the interests of one part of the country was not well done. There's no reason they can't overcome it and sit at a table now and agree to a truce, as long as that truce is not prejudiced with preconditions of course.
