Awesome. He is/was a great guy, as you said. Played softball with him once at the Disch. It pisses me off to this day how Clemens ****ed him over as far as UT honors are concerned.
I don’t see that as an overpay. And if that’s what the market dictates then the astros need to adjust their expectations. I could really care less about Crane saving some money.
So you're saying that it is possible for you to care less? Eovaldi has a history, a long history of arm issues. Even more importantly he's been a good pitcher for part of one season. No reason we should take that risk, let the red sox take it. 50 million for a league average starter that's available for 3/4 a season at best.
It’s not about Crane saving his own personal money. It’s about how spending money on one player affects how we spend on others. Money is not unlimited.
I’m simply saying that most top tier free agents are going to require a financial gamble. Crane has always said he’d spend the money in a winning situation, and yet we’re seeing very little of that. They have major needs on the starting staff and I don’t think they should wait until the deadline. Eovaldi is one of the toughest calls because of the Tommy John surgeries. But I still don’t think it’s an overpay.
I have no idea why fans are crying about not splurging or cashing in prospects this offseason. Ask yourselves: do you want us to be the Braves of the 90-00's, or the Cards of the 00-10's, or would you prefer us to shoot for short term veteran upgrades like the Yankees, the Mets, the Rangers, or the Nats of the past decade? Whatever happened to trusting the #Process? We'll be fine.
the problem is your rival keeps adding talent., so you have to find a way to keep up . i dont want to deplete the farm system, but im sure there is a couple of moves that can be made without doing that. We need a couple of starters + a couple of bats. (especially DH) I think its to early in the process, and doubt the astros are not making any moves
They're going to be in a class of themselves. The Braves 90's teams wouldn't have been able to keep their core nucleus together with today's arbitration issues... and even then, we're talking about having 3 HOF starting pitchers in their primes at the same time, pre steroids era. Some of those Cardinals teams were weaker than people remember... and there were times their payroll was high enough to justify slightly better results. The Astros will be as good as their core is. Core was great in 2017, but they still needed more to push them over the top (Verlander). Core was worse in 2018 (despite Bregman), and they didn't win it all despite having the most wins in franchise history. They will (and should) continue to add pieces to supplement the prime years of their still relatively cheap homegrown players. If they're surrounding these guys with garbage, its largely a waste of time... and the front office knows that. Likewise, they're not going to overpay for a rental in the off-season... but they will acquire one at a time when the price is lower and there's still enough time for them to make a difference (mid-season, or pre-trade deadline).
Whatever happened to patience? So many kneejerk posters. Building a roster is not like a video game where you get instant gratification. No one here would last 3 months as GM of the Astros!
Jeff Luhnow hasn't suddenly forgotten how to hire smart, hyper-competent people. I don't know the depth - if any - of Luhnow's involvement in their departure - but generally, turning over your staff and getting a fresh set of eyes, a new perspective, different ideas is going to help keep the Astros on the cutting edge.
The Astros are currently projected to win 1 less game than the Dodgers, Red Sox, and Yankees, with the rest of the league projected well behind that group. They will very likely win the division even if they do nothing. Plenty of offseason plus the trade deadline for Houston to assert themselves. All is still good.
If Altuve and Correa were as good, and healthy, in 2018 as they were in 2017, there's a very good chance they would have won even more regular season games and had a much better chance to win in the playoffs. Luhnow is going to add guys here/there... but the stars they have need to play like stars for them to win it all. Sounds straightforward, but that is literally the formula here. People worried about not adding as many people as other teams are adding are losing sight of what the Astros already have. Once you have those guys already in the fold, you roll with them... and supplement to them.
Obviously, he could care less. He posted something. People that say they couldn't care less are lying because they cared enough to say something.
