And you think NYC is unfriendly?

Not sure why you got so defensive about Texas - people there don't care about the environment or what happens in other parts of the world.

You really think New Yorkers care about what happens in other parts of the world? Absolutely not. New York is an extremely self centered and absorbed place.

I don’t hate NYC and while the people are not nearly as friendly as people in a lot of other places, they are at least friendlier than Boston.

My point being that New Yorkers don’t especially give a **** about other people and they sure as hell don’t really care about what happens outside of NYC. I have seen similar attitudes in only a few places; Southern California and Dallas. The levels of self absorption are amazing.

So before you throw stones, be real about where you live. It is a great city in many ways , but it isn’t the land of compassion or empathy.,

I'm down with the idea of eating less meat. I have it for basically every lunch and dinner; that's probably too much. I just need to get better at finding decent non-meat meals. Every time I think about having a meatless salad as a meal I die inside.

There’s a new meat market in league city that will wet age 44 farm ribeyes. Mother of god I could eat them 3 times a day If I made more money.

I'm talking about the environment and other countries. People in Texas don't care about that, in NYC they definitely do care more about what happens in the rest of the world. I am just amazed that you think otherwise. In Texas people loved the Iraq war and cheered it on hoping they would kick Iraqi butt. In NYC, people were concerned about collateral damage.

I'm not talking about who is going to help you out if your car breaks down.

Texas is a farm state that drastically rewards people financially with the tax credit if you keep cattle on your land. You are kind of foolish financially if you don’t lease out your land at the very least.

Texas’ carbon problem has a lot to do with the refineries as well but the Cattle actually plays a huge part. You could probably do a lot just by looking at other ways to decentivizing unnecessarily having cattle on your land. Allowing for more trees to grow on farm land and absorb more carbon.

It's probably not helpful to stereotype the attitudes of all Texans or all New Yorkers or anyone else.

I recognize the problem with red meat and all meat for the environment, for American society, and for my own health. I have a complicated relationship with food though, so I'm not likely going to be able to clear that hurdle. It'd be great if I could though. I'm working on reforming my diet by increments.

Now that the deniers have fallen flat, they have taken up the position of bashing those who aren’t vegan....

No they are bashing people who want to push this on everyone else while their lifestyles stay exactly the same.

This is more rationalization than reason.

Shaming others through hypocrisy only works on the weak minded. If these hypothetical hypocrites were to push laws, presumably they'd have to follow the same laws as "everyone else".

Maybe I'm a stickler for wording, but you can't have it both ways.

As for my opinion, I support means to reduce my footprint even if I buy things I don't need. I like the American lifestyle even if I try to avoid being extravagantly wasteful in order to feel good, while paying more to follow the principle.

Driving in an electric car or reusing things people normally throw away after using it once isn't going to make ladies drop their panties, but it is a livable and conscious choice. Like any other livable choice, it doesn't make that person a saint either.

I do love that what we're talking about as "toxins" in this thread are what we all are currently exhaling right now that plants are breathing in. I understand that CO2 can be toxic in ridiculously high concentrations of it, so in that sense it's technically true that it can be a toxin, but it always makes me laugh when it's described using hyperbolic language.

The population of China pollutes the environment with 1.15 trillion pounds of toxins every year by breathing. Clearly we must do something about this.

Clearly suicide is the only way to eliminate ones carbon footprint completely.o_O All we need is volunteers to do their part to help save the environment.

We should also eliminate exercise or anything that makes us breath heavier to reduce the amount of CO2 we exhale . This will also help us live shorter lives in case one cannot bring themselves to commit to option #1.o_O

    ;)

Sure, we can offset China's growth by not buying their products or exploit their leaky regulation standards such as not sending our junk to them for recycling and "reprocessing" and doing it locally, albeit more expensively.

Responsibility is pricey, but if we consider ourselves kings of innovation then surely there's a way to profit.

The status quo is to stick our heads in the sand and externalize the costs. There's probably a lesson or two about compound interest in there for the business types...

I think we can all do our own parts to help where we can and most of us do. Conserving energy typically saves money in the long run so there is incentive other than just the environmental concerns. That being said, it is a personal choice. People who want to push this on others should start by leading by example.
