We know Bob can come up with offense plays that generate points, but for some reason this man like to just maintain lead and not extend it. This mindset not gonna bode well in playoffs.

Thats why hes the new rick smith. Thread is going on 3 years now and hes still here. He seemingly does enough to keep his job every year.

Certainly doesn’t look good for the BCS rankings or coaches poll when the margins of victory aren’t exorbitant!

I agree, he does tend to play it safe once they have a lead.... then again, we’ve seen this line get lackadaisical with their protections, along with Watson getting careless with the ball, which can help turn momentum in an instance.

He clearly prescribes to the ball control, get enough of a lead, then don’t be stupid mindset that for the most part will generate wins against teams with limited fire power to make comebacks.

Had Rick Smith not signed Osweiler, he may still have his job.

And yes, Watson is the most important player this team has going for them... all their future success is tied to his development.

The reason is fairly clear: the OL is not good; the defense, OTOH, is exceptionally good. Sprinkle in he's down Fuller and Coutee, which limits his options, offensively.

This is the offense BOB (and us) need; it's not necessarily the offense either of us wants.

I assume at some point the man will get fired...no NFL job is forever....I just don't think it will be soon.

A wise man once said "There's a saying in my business that there are two kinds of coaches - those who have been fired and those who haven't been fired yet"

I’m not buying that because if we got the lead without them, why not continue to ty to dominate the opponent instead of holding on for dear life?

Because BOB has more faith in the defense than he does in Watson for whatever reason. When he gets a lead he just wants to run out the clock. It's working for now, so that's fine, but that same mentality can cost you games.

Yes! That’s what I’m saying. Against a team like the Bills, it’ll work. We face teams with good qbs, like the top teams, that won’t go well. It’s hard to tell a team to keep their feet on the gas if they’re use to doing it the way BOB does it.

But as I stated earlier, BOB has done a good job turning this team around. Play calling has improved. Red zone HAS to be the next thing to improve.

You could argue he "held on for dear life" in Denver* & Washington; but not vs Jacksonville, Miami, Tennessee or Cleveland. They blew those teams out.

    * And remember, in Denver, he was essentially down to one healthy/competent WR and lost two starting OL during the game; the situation - which he had no control over, mandated he hold on for dear life.

Yeah no doubt. Hard to argue with that but if we beating a team 28-3 at half, we should come away with a 31-30 victory

But... that has literally never happened, nor has anything close to it happened. They built a 20-0 halftime lead yesterday; were outscored 9-13 in the second half. They coasted - but at no point was that game ever even close to being in jeopardy.

They don't have the OL/playmakers to *consistently* run up 30, 40 points a game (+, for all the "yeah, but"ing about their opponents, they've played against *a lot* of good defenses this year). But they *do* have the defense to protect #rd/4th quarter leads.

Look, credit BOB for recognizing what he has and leaning into it. It's obviously working.

Not quite as bad but to make your point the Texans have scored just one 2nd half touchdown in the last four games. In the last two games (Browns, Titans) it was due to a big lead, the two previous games ended up being close calls but they held on.

When you're BOB, a diarrhea smoothie is something to aspire towards.

    All true.

The needle has been ever so slowly moving upwards.

It's a long journey for BOB to get back into "not sucking" territory, but every long journey has to start somewhere.

I agree with your point, there's nothing wrong trying to prevent bad turnovers, but like u also mention this mindset will generate wins against teams with limited fire power, idk how it's gonna fly in playoffs. It also suck that we have a bad oline/missing o players

He's absolutely earned the right to come back next year. It's a huge offseason for him and Gaine to fix holes and add quality depth (and an assistant to help him manage game situations?) Barring major injuries, there's no excuses next season.

Oh..it happened (at least the 28-3 halftime lead). Just with another Houston team. :)

BoB may have held on to that lead
