I’d say Johnson is roughly equivalent in value to Ronnie Dawson or Derek Fisher. Seems like a great deal for Washington. The Nats and Braves are now both out of the Realmuto sweepstakes. My guess is the Rockies, Dodgers, Angels, and Astros are the main teams in the running, with the Mets, Brewers, A’s and Red Sox as long shots.
I wonder how this trade affects MIA and KC's asking points. If we can get Realmuto for Alvarez or JB as centerpieces, great. Part of me would rather go after Perez. His add'l year control fits perfectly, and I can only assume his asking price is a bit more reasonable that whatever is happening in Florida. I don't think Goldy is a need. He's a sexy addition, but maybe we have enough internal ABs at 1B to really allocate our resources elsewhere, especially if our FO doesn't think it can keep Goldy long term or would rather let Beer play out?
Other than that it takes the Nats out of the running, I don’t think this affects Reamutos asking price. Gomes and Realmuto are very different players with very different trajectories. But either way, Luhnow has his tipping point and he won’t go over it regardless of what Miami asks. A package led by Alvarez and Bukauskas should be enough for Realmuto. For me, if Tucker is involved then Miami needs to send a highly rated lower level prospect back to even things out.
I like Kemp. Having said that, Jake’s glove IS all that. Also the Astros really would rather keep Springer out of center if possible. Theoretically the Astros could put Pollock in center or sign Hamilton for his glove and ability to steal bases.
I agree this is a more complete evaluation. However the question is what is the teams composition come April. The Astros are fairly confident that they are going to improve offensively and at 2 and possibly 3 line up spots. That favors Marisnick, who apparently has convinced the Grim Reaper he is a cat because he has 9 lives with his he Astros.
Astros have spoken to Pollock’s agent... it all comes down to money and years. The Astros are very confident they will get an upgrade at catcher.
Kaplan does do good work at athletic. Losing Cameron was huge for Fangraphs. I think they do well on prospect coverage, but missing an analytical side.
It's obvious that he isn't loved for his ability to hit. We aren't counting on him to improve in this area, either.
So Hermann was non - tendered and is now a FA. Does this mean the Astros have a catcher in their sights ? And/or are confident they are signing or trading for one soon ?
They’ve always been certain they were going to add another catcher, claiming Herrmann didn’t change that. But I don’t understand why they claimed Herrmann only to non tender him now. Maybe they claimed him not sure if they were going to add a RH or LH starting catcher, and now they are sure they’re going to add a lefty (and keep Stassi). That would likely mean Grandal.
Never seen a crop of non tenders like this. You could build a 75 win team out of these guys: C McCann 1B Bour 2B Schoop SS Beckham 3B Solarte RF Garcia CF Hamilton LF Grossman DH Davidson Bench: Herrmann, Owings, Flores Rotation: Fiers, Graveman, Shoemaker, Miller Bullpen: Bush, Strickland, Avilan, Parker, Wilson, Boxberger, Cedeno, Jennings, Gearrin
Hamilton would be a nice replacement for Marisnick. Worse hitter, but he would be nice to have as a pinch runner.
