Agreed. This is the biggest issue right now that people with a big piece of the oil industry pie are peddling as catastrophic. It's more catastrophic to lose profits than it is to lose entire species, coastlines, health and introduce more virulent bacteria into society. This is when capitalism in the global market works against itself and the educated world has seen it coming for a long time - the shocking thing is how slow the response has been. Too many hands in too many pockets to do what's necessary.

Just like government itself has checks and balances, so does the base human drive for accumulating and extracting resources need checks and balances. It absolutely should not be based on supply and demand and the market. The market cannot see past the next 1 or 2 years, whereas scientists, environmentalists and those not living for immediate profits can.
