One of the more refreshing things this season for me is how I no longer get nervous every time we punt or kick the ball away like I had been for years. The special teams coverage has been incredible, I now know every time a returner makes an effort the Texans swarm the ball and usually lay in a big hit on the guy. Now that Ervin's gone I'm not scared of muffs every time either, which hasn't happened for me since the J.J. Moses days.
Don't you dare teach him who David Carr is. If he ever asks, let him know that Derek Carr is an only child.
Seriously? Dude is a 3x DPoY and, not including the most recent time, he's only been DP of the week 6 times in his career? That doesn't make sense, NFL!
James Harden was Player of the week and month countless times, only to have stephanie get all the votes for mvp one year. Ive always had the idea of just adding up all the potm and potw as points and thats how you get your mvp. Makes the most sense. You cant outperform everybody all year, just to have someone outperform you the last couple weeks of the year and get beat out. Its stoopid.
Yup Gaines put an emphasis on improving special teams and it's showing. Even Carter (despite the fumble that could've been really bad) has had noticeable impact.
A lot of the guys that are making an impact were here last year. There are a few exceptions but the improvement is likely due to the coaching hire.
Ya Seely is doing a great job coaching these guys up. But I don't consider guys like Bademosi, Kalambayi, Carter (in limited reps), etc...as exceptions. Even Daniels is one of the leaders in punts inside the 20. All these guys were brought in solely to help out on special teams and its showing.
Bademosi has been a disappointment in my opinion. The only time we've heard his name has been for penalties it seems. Brian Peters was brought in specifically for special teams and he has been great prior to injuries. The best special teams player has been Scarlett by most measurements. Daniels has been very good but it wasn't like punting was a big problem last year. He does need to improve his holding on field goal kicks. The Texans have always brought players in to improve special teams. Drummond, Peters, Grimes, etc were known more for special teams play than their regular position. UDFAs like Bullough and Cole also brought it in coverage. They've had the players. The coach and his schemes actually made Tyler Ervin look decent before he got cut.
Does Nick Martin get graded poorly every game? Starting to think an upgrade at Center in the draft could also be a possibility. A stud Center is huge
They have a "stud center", actually a couple of them. They just have them playing different positions.
Mancz really doesnt get enough snaps. Kelemete has been a nice addition, not bad for a signing of a career backup as certain posters might say. I hold my breath every time he seemingly gets hurt, which is every game it seems like.
Remember when every kick return had an illegal block in the back penalty? The coaching has really got these guys playing clean special teams.
