True, for now. But I suspect over the course of this offseason the Yankees especially will improve significantly, enough to separate themselves from the Astros if the Astros don’t do anything. Add Machado, the Japanese SP, and 2 elite bullpen arms and suddenly NY projects to be 5-6 wins better than Houston. And although Boston is more limited, I do expect them to improve their bullpen and possibly their rotation.
I'd be willing to bet you posted something similar last year after the Yankees landed Stanton... You don't win championships in December.
If I did, it would have been true, before Houston added Gerrit Cole (not sure which happened first and too lazy to go look).
Nice to see moves starting to be made. Next week should be crazy. That's a little more than I thought Donaldson would get but makes sense. He can prove himself for a year and Braves get a possible impact bat without long term risk.
Just another reminder about these offseason threads ... please split news out to its own thread. If people want to see and discuss the latest news, they won't see it skmming the forums or on the front page if it's buried in here.
Welp, there goes my idea of signing Donaldson on a cheap 1 year deal, and sliding Bregman to LF idea. Donaldson signed for $8 or so million more than I would've been comfortable with. That bodes well for the free agents, and is not a good sign for the Astros looking for deals. If free agents will be signing for a ton, it looks like we'll be very active on the trade front.
That seemed like such an overpay for Donaldson. He hasn’t been that good in a few years. Are they looking for him to provide a similar Beltran-type role
? He was a top-5 MVP candidate in 2014-2016 and would have been in 2017 except for injuries (he was on pace for something like 45 HRs along with a 0.950 OPS but only played 113 games). He was certainly a mess this year due to a long injury, but he's only 33 (vs Beltran at 40).
We'll see how the market goes. Could be a massive overpay, or a very reasonable deal depending on how the offseason plays out. Personally I think that is significantly higher than I expected especially without a team option.
Guess I mostly am remembering the recent injuries and 2018. Thought he was older too. Glad we didn’t pay that either way
Random trade proposal by MLB: I doubt that would be enough for the DBacks, but that would be a really nice deal. Adds a star bat to the lineup and a solid starter (his contract would be 75 mil over 3 years). I just really want to see Goldy in our lineup Source: https://www.mlb.com/news/mlbs-5-blockbuster-trades-that-make-sense/c-301037694
High number because they only wanted a one year deal. He wouldn’t have gotten close to that in a multi year deal
