Your article is about people applying for asylum in the US and whether Mexico will host them while they wait. It has nothing to do with asylum in Mexico.
Sure... you can offer that disingenuous argument if you like. You drive down to the border... find the woman and two children, and I would be happy to let them stay with me. You see, I don't think they are joining a mob of woman and children to break into my house.
The migrant rush on the border probably wasn't smart because it'll be used to justify anti-immigrant sentiment and policy. DHS is going to create a crisis by keeping asylum-seekers on the Mexican side. It'll be like Calais -- a refugee tent city. If Mexico and the US doesn't get very proactive quick, there's going to be consequences. Humanitarian problems like feeding and housing thousands, disease, foregone educations for the children, impacts of crime in the camp, development of gangs, creating opportunity for cartels, pimps, and coyotes. It's going to bad for refugees, for Mexico, and for the US. We need a real fix, not some capricious rulemaking by one guy with occasional slapdowns by the courts. That means major and bipartisan legislation. We haven't been able to do that on immigration in decades, and the atmosphere for it now is probably more divided than ever. So, I'm not feeling terribly optimistic.
Remember the argument that waterboarding is harmless, not torture - it is just having water poured on you and every special forces soldier has to do it as part of their training? Good times in the mid 00's. The oldies never go out of fashion. Reactionaries showing their commitment to the environment by recycling everything.
We have immigration laws. They are being followed by everyone but the caravan. They can apply in a normal legal manner. I agree we need better immigration laws, but a mob grouping up and breaking our laws isn't proof of this.
Very diverse... I live in a small community between Conroe and Montgomery. And my wife's mom is from Guatemala while my grandfather was from Mexico, so I suspect they would feel pretty comfortable. Was there a point to your question?
Our laws suck, one. Two, they are routinely flouted. This is a view I have in common with Trumpers. Good immigration law does not result in 12 million illegal aliens. Border security seems to work fine, but a process that requires refugees to live in a tent city for years waiting for an appointment with a judge is a failed process.
I agree our laws suck and need to be changed, but i dont view this caravan situation as proof of that. They aren't bothering to go through our legal process so what would more laws do?
I'm not saying it's proof. I'm saying it is a humanitarian disaster in the making that our sucky laws will create. Also, I reject the assertion that they aren't bothering with the legal process. A couple hundred people skirted Mexican law by bypassing their boundaries. It's unclear what they would have done if they reached our wall. As I understand it, a smaller group attempted to climb our wall at a different spot and were thwarted. Some were arrested (and will be deported) by Mexican police for throwing rocks. So dozens to hundreds from a group of 5,000. What are the rest doing? Border agents are processing refugee claims as fast as they can (which I hear is a paltry ~ 100/day) with no shortage of applicants. Don't be too quick to paint the entire group based on the behavior of a few.
The president's wife is from Slovenia, yet at every opportunity you assert the implications of xenophobia and racism when it comes to border security. So again, how diverse is that neighborhood of yours?
What does the first lady's country of origin have to do with trump's policy towards border? And again, what does the diversity of my neighborhood have to do with this discussion? Since you have a burning interest, my neighborhood has four African American families, three families from Latin American countries, two same-sex couples, two families from India, and one family from China. I happen to know since I am the neighborhood care group leader for my neighborhood church, so I have met everyone in my neighborhood. So, since I have answered your question, what is your point?
You enjoy directing your half-witted arguments towards others, but when those same kinds of arguments are directed at you -- you don't like it?
Trump declared Monday the U.S. will begin cutting aid to three Central American countries, he accused of failing to stop thousands of migrants heading for the U.S. border. what ever happened to his previous lie that George Soros was funding the caravan ? https://www.apnews.com/935f7f42e3c34b1e98e211bee16af618
I honestly don't know how removing aid from a poor country to punish them for economic migrants is anything but counterproductive?
First responsible thing Mexico has done in a while. The real problem here is that decades of neglect have lead to this situation. Imagine if a wall was built in 2006 with meaningful border enforcement: would there be an opioid problem, a meth problem, a crack problem, 15 million illegal immigrants, stagnant American wages, and horrific levels of violence in Mexico and Central America (probably yes)? Would there even be a Trump presidency?
NO REASON They were on the other side of the border and were rushing the port of entry. They weren’t not going to get across because you gas them. Temporarily closing the port to be able to control the flow of people coming up is reasonable. Gassing them on the other side of the border is unnecessary.
