You're asking the difference between Trump, Stephen Miller, John Kelly and Hillary Clinton? Ha.

I've read the Guardian article and that provides much more context to Clinton's comments. No surprise she doesn't actually hate immigrants and goes on to state a few times she admires the compassion shown by Merkel and others towards immigrants. What she is saying, and with good evidence, is that fear of immigrants helped to fuel the rise of the populist right including in her own defeat. What she appears to be stating is that a path for centrist governments is immigration reform that separates from the much of the other actions taken by right wing populist.
"The use of immigrants as a political device and as a symbol of government gone wrong, of attacks on one’s heritage, one’s identity, one’s national unity has been very much exploited by the current administration here,” she said.

“There are solutions to migration that do not require clamping down on the press, on your political opponents and trying to suborn the judiciary, or seeking financial and political help from Russia to support your political parties and movements.”
This is actually not that far off from what she had campaigned on and how the Obama Administration actually governed. Even though she upheld immigration she wasn't the open borders globalist that many portrayed her as. Her platform included and the previous administration undertook increased border security and also greater deportations.

She also wouldn't have lied about the so-called "threat" trump has been bellowing about, his absurd deployment of over 5,000 members of our military to the border, taking them away from Thanksgiving with their loved ones, in many cases, and authorizing lethal force to "combat" them. Anyone wondering about trump's actions should read this from the Military Times, a media arm of the US military.

PHOENIX — The more than 5,200 active-duty troops being sent by President Donald Trump to the U.S.-Mexico border will be limited in what they can do under a federal law that restricts the military from engaging in law enforcement on American soil.

That means the troops will not be allowed to detain immigrants, seize drugs from smugglers or have any direct involvement in stopping a migrant caravan that is still about 1,000 miles from the nearest border crossing.

Mr. trump is a damned liar, and anyone who believes his crap needs to consider treatment in a mental health facility, more vitamins, a more diverse ingestion of the news, and certainly more education, assuming they are capable of learning anything else. In my opinion, and it ain't humble.

Agree with her even if her point is not articulated clearly to where it can get modulated with misleading headlines.

Liberal world leaders (not just Democrats) need to have answers to the immigration issue and fast because being silent on the issue has allowed for people like Trump to gain power.

The Dems need a coherent message fast like they did with healthcare (partially because the House Repulicans gifted that to them) because xenophobia will be what Trump and co run on starting in one year.

Agreed. The Dems keep letting the GOP control the narrative.

There is no equality in modern immigration. The US and other first world nations need an equal opportunity based immigration system.

And why is that? It's due to the party having the same tired old leadership, in my opinion. Mr. trump is equally old, and fat, and obsessed with lying, but he isn't tired. We need new leadership, young leadership, certainly younger than we possess now. So who would I suggest? I like Beto O'Rourke and Kamala Harris. Congressman O'Rourke is certainly a new face, a great campaigner who has taken the lessons given by Bernie Sanders to heart when it comes to campaign finance, and Senator Harris is a highly intelligent former Attorney General of California. Both are relatively young, both are attractive, and both are very articulate. I think they would make a great team in 2020. My personal preference would be Beto at the head of the ticket, with Kamala as VP. We could do far, far worse than that pair, in my humble opinion.

The US has one of the worst immigration policies on the planet. At a time when there's never been more downward pressure on labor, there's a border that has essentially been flooding the country with cheap labor, and a congress completely unwilling to act on it.

The country simply has no real need for more unskilled labor unless you want your underwear washed by someone earning $3 an hour. But what tends to happen in any country where there's immigration of unwanted or undesirable people, is the country tends to turn itself entirely against immigration.

The practical policy is to nix the undesirables, and then the entire public won't much care, and will accept the skilled immigrants that the country mostly needs. Ramping up into anti immigration full stop is what's been happening in Europe, the centre left parties are becoming niche parties of the left wing elites in country after country (Germany? 20%, France? 6%, Italy? 23%, etc)

Because they get dumped into a battle of narratives where their position is untenable, both sides take binary extremes, Trump is invasion, blah blah blah, the democrats are, it really doesn't matter, and so long as people feel there is something wrong, any message along the "something is wrong" spectrum, even the extreme one will outshine the nothing wrong message.
