Ah, yes, threatening to shut down the government after leaked transcripts of his calls with Enrique Peña Nieto revealed him calling this an unimportant item that only mattered politically.
Pretty much this. Speaks volumes about candidate Trump being a con man who is still riding on the impressionability of his voter base. Goldman Sachs cabinet. MASSIVE campaign donations during the generals. The wall. The list goes on and on...
Again... the US-Mexico border is the most heavily crossed border in the world with over 25 million people legally crossing a month. There's a lot of goods moving back and forth and the notion that a wall will be effective is nonsensical.
tw Many in his true base just genuinely don't care about any of this. They didn't elect Trump to actually do the job of being the President. They elected Trump to serve as yet another Confederate monument in their "Culture War" against the liberals and all these "diverse people" changing their ideal version of America. Whether this base is enough to win elections going forward is another question. There are people who voted Trump who may not be part of the base. A big part of the math is also how many of the rest of us turn out to vote.
OK< I will propose a different solution to all of the above. One that it way less expensive, leverages American products and labor, and won't destroy sightlines along the scenic US/Mexico border. Instead of a wall, or even a fence, dig a moat and fill with American alligators (imported from Louisiana and Florida). Moats with alligators worked in the past (in the middle ages). The alligators work cheap. And hey, they're American. Now I know. the objection... just like a wall, a 15 foot wide moat is beaten by a 16 foot ladder or bridge. But hey, those criticisms are just that... criticism.
My point exactly: empty, thoughtless replies. Hopefully you are not under the impression that the U.S. cannot both have a border wall and prosperous trade with Mexico. I say this because your original statement seemed to imply that the U.S. was not already engaged in trade with Mexico. My posting of the NAFTA link was to reiterate that the U.S. already has beneficial trade for Mexico - and look where it has gotten Mexico: Millions of Mexicans illegally enter the U.S. Mexican journalists are being targeted and killed like Mexico is some kind of war zone. Mexico is now the number one point of origin for illegal narcotics entering the U.S. Mexico is experiencing 20-year highs in violence. We've been down this road many times. We can look at historic and contemporary examples of when walls work: they work in Israel; they worked in Germany (though the motive was far different). We can also make an analogy to fences, gates, and other barriers used to secure residential and commercial property. The thinking is essentially no different.
No, the reply showed the lack of logic in your post about random facts. Facts not related to why a wall is necessary are helpful. You have yet to show a connection. So when it has worked, it was covering areas much smaller and more controllable than the expansive territory currently proposed. If you are using the same thinking of what worked in those limited areas to the giant wall proposed all along the border, then the thinking is flawed.
You keep ignoring the fact that the US's demand for illegal drugs is responsible for increased crime and instability. You seem to think that our government's budgets is greater than the cartels'.
If there was a government shutdown while this hurricane happened, does that mean there would be a shortage of FEMA employees for the natural disaster we're facing ahead? All to build a wall?
I think it would be a shut down of non-essential personnel. The military and FEMA would continue working.
That's good at least. I understand the whole elections have consequences yadda yadda stuff but it'd suck if lack of FEMA employees negatively affected Texans dealing with a natural disaster. Most of my friends and family are in this state.
You think people are going to simply ignore Trump's threats (assuming they haven't already)? Trump pulls back threat to shut down government over border wall — for now https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...r-border-wall-for-now/?utm_term=.a3036c940cc2
Idiot-in-chief threatens a government shutdown again if he doesn't get his ineffective and bigly expensive vanity wall...
Trump, much to the chagrin of Mitch McConnell, averted a shutdown last year. Let's see if Democrats can return the favor by putting our country before their party.
Building a wall isn't putting country ahead of anything. Funding a wall that we were promised would be built by Mexico certainly isn't putting country first.
Trump was on-the-ball and ahead of the curve when it comes to the opioid crisis. Trump was right: there is a drug problem; we need to do something about. Why not then allow the one political figure who saw this coming before anyone else implement his plan to solve this crisis? Opposing him at this point is just putting party, ideology, or hate ahead of this nation's welfare.
