I believe about 1200 of them already have. The Caravans #'s have dropped quite a bit since it started because of that..and the fact that about 500 gave up and returned home.
Well, I think you may be right. I looked it up and apparently we are required to under international law (we get to make determination if standards are met obviously): Asylum is a protection granted to foreign nationals already in the United States or at the border who meet the international law definition of a “refugee.” The United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol define a refugee as a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country, and cannot obtain protection in that country, due to past persecution or a well-founded fear of being persecuted in the future “on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” Congress incorporated this definition into U.S. immigration law in the Refugee Act of 1980. As a signatory to the 1967 Protocol, and through U.S. immigration law, the United States has legal obligations to provide protection to those who qualify as refugees. The Refugee Act established two paths to obtain refugee status—either from abroad as a resettled refugee or in the United States as an asylum seeker. www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/asylum-united-states I didn't look too hard, but I didn't find anything requiring an asylum seeker to seek asylum from the first country he/she reaches after fleeing his/her home country.
As corroboration, you'll examine the situation in Europe, you'll find mention of Syrian asylum seekers crossing by land through Greece, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary to try and seek asylum in Western Europe. There was as place in Northern France known as the Calais Jungle full of refugees trying to get to England.
even your ludicrous extrapolation is only a 5% increase in population In Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, USCIS found 60,566 individuals to have credible fear. These individuals, many of whom were detained during this screening process, will be afforded an opportunity to apply for asylum defensively and establish that they meet the refugee definition. The number of credible fear cases has skyrocketed since the procedure was implemented—in FY 2009, USCIS completed 5,523 cases. Case completions reached an all-time high in FY 2016 at 92,071 and decreased to 79,977 in FY 2017. https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/asylum-united-states
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TOLD BY MILITARY INTELLIGENCE ‘ONLY SMALL PERCENTAGE’ OF MIGRANT CARAVAN WILL REACH U.S. BORDER The information was received before the administration moved ahead with plans to deploy more than 5,200 troops to the border if the Trump WH had estimated that around 7,000 migrants were traveling toward the border with the caravan as of October 25, then it would have also determined that fewer than 1,500 would be likely to make it to the country’s ports of entry. The intelligence assessment was still being briefed to commanders as of October 27 https://www.newsweek.com/trump-administration-migrant-caravan-border-troops-1193694
15,000 troops to heroically defend our border against what 1500 immigrants? Waste of tax payer money, but republicans don't care. I bet many are getting a hard on that their CnC is so serious about defending the border, not that it might b an act right before midterms. This and the imaginary middle class tax cut are desperate (maybe effective) moves by da Donald to get more republicans voters.
just to add perspective, more than ~ 1,500 Pittsburgers showed up to protest Trump's visit there Demonstrators cried “Leave Pittsburgh, leave Pennsylvania” and hoisted signs that read "Words Matter" close to where the president and first lady Melania Trump placed white roses and stones from the White House on a memorial to the victims of the rampage. The president would later visit victims at a hospital. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...adness-controversy-funerals-begin/1817183002/
Major fight with my father about this tonight - he kept saying can't let illegals in illegally, and I kept reminding him they are refugees trying to get in, The legal way. I can't talk politics with him anymore at all, he is so misinformed that it is all I can do to not continue to say....nope that is wrong, that is wrong, that is wrong....he just ignores facts. And he votes......sad. DD
I wish there was a 'Chickens Coming Home to Roost' option. 25 plus years of Evangelical missions pumping them with No Abortion propaganda and US International aid tied to pro life policies. On top of the 80s CIA political shenanigans.
...sorry to hear about the friction with your dad. I never knew my own father. The story's convoluted (even for me), but I know that my mother loved him. She kept his surname and never remarried, and while I've long ago decided that whatever happened between them was their business, there are more than a few times where I would have liked to have known what he thought about any number of things. If it's any consolation, I notice you said that you can't talk to your dad anymore...which kind of suggests that, whether you agreed or disagreed, you could still talk to one another at one point. That's something. Current political fjords over some of these social chasms are, in many ways, a bridge too far...but this might be a watershed moment for you and your dad. I think you'll both be able to find your way back...give it a little time....
Arguing with your loved ones about politics is a losing proposition. Enjoy your dad. Don't talk about politics
The troops at the border thing is a classic Trump play where he breaks something just so he can say he fixed it... and then he just leaves it broken. I’m sure in two weeks he will say it’s cheaper to just build a wall then house Troops there long term and demand a gazillion dollars to fund his stupid wall. Our entire government is one giant vanity piggy bank for this dumbass.
Agreed with this sentiment. I nearly ruined last thanksgiving and Christmas because of my mother wanting to talk politics with me. My father implemented a no politics rule which has been great. If she says one word about the subject either she stops or I leave . It’s been great because I love my parents, we just don’t see eye to eye on what’s good with this country.
