And by "stand up against" he means "tweet in a slighlty miffed fashion about!" ....and absolutely nothing more. Whoever sent it probably wasn't even standing when they sent that tweet. Screw the Nazis, and screw their GOP enablers even more.
...'bout time. Should have dealt with this stuff a long time ago. At least, that's what World War 2 was supposed to be about. And to that, there's a reason why it's such a bad idea to set history aside trying to uncomplicate your perspective or agenda... When 20,000 American Nazis Descended Upon New York City
Too little too late. This should’ve started years ago against the obvious Nazi. Who the hell lives in his district? Great that people are finally realizing he’s one of the worst people alive but renouncing him with a whopping 6 days to go is a bit disingenuous.
So far in Montgomery County, early voting (as of yesterday) was on track to have more voters than the prior midterm turnout record set in 2014. That year, 115,932 voted in total. So far in early voting, 106,099 had voted as of yesterday. Should get close to the 2016 early voting total of 116,131. I'm not sure what that means for either side...but turnout is going to smash records.
It will be interesting to see the percentages of early voters vs those on voting day. It seems more people are wising up to early voting. It also indicates there are less undecided people. People are becoming more informed. However we still have a long ways to go. I would love people to understand more how local and state government play a bigger role in their life.
I would love it if our officials made it easier for people to participate in democracy and vote versus trying to discourage or take away their vote to win elections.
Yes, its a small ripple in the pond, but never the less, important. If we could only have serious reform with the voting process that would alleviate all sorts of issues. For starters, we could remove the power the RNC and DNC have in the voting process that is frequently being abused.
The power the RNC and DNC is minute especially compared to the power to stack the deck towards one party by gerrymandering or bogus voter id laws and misplacement of polling stations. Voter fraud is a non-issue. The issues are voter disenfranchisement which the GOP does not care about, and the issue is foreign entities hacking or manipulating elections - which the GOP does not care about. But vote fraud it does care about because it just so happens that Voter Id laws and fewer polling places directly benefits the GOP's chances of winning more elections.
Im less concerned with partisan issues and more concerned with the overall voting experience. If we had genuine voter reform, all of your partisan voter concerns would be alleviated and we could also fix bigger issues that are never discussed. For starters, we have the means to do secure electronic voting. It will require the local and state governments to give up their power, but its available. In the very least, we should have the ability to ensure our vote was casted and counted, even after the election. For example, if there is ever a recount, your existing vote is essentially removed and then readded. This is where voter fraud can happen. It is a very serious issue. Ballots can be lost. New ballots can be found. Ballots can be swapped. We also need to improve the expose of candidates. Sure, we all hear about Hillary and Trump in the election, but the reality is the POTUS has a very small impact in our daily. Most people can not name their congressmen, much less who they ran against. All they care about is if there is an R or a D next to their name, regardless of how shitty of a candidate they are. Its congress who is ****ing up this country, not Trump. Not Obama. Not Bush. I would like to see a portal of information for all candidates running, down to the local level, that includes profiles, debates and commitments. For the non-extremist/low energy voter, they are not going to put forth much effort to ensure a good candidate gets voted in. I would like to see voter registration controlled on a national level. A voter should never be listed as inactive. It should be tied to a SSN. No SSN, no vote. If one wants to see their voting status, they should be able to pull it up at anytime to see what races they are allowed to vote in.
Dude, I watched a bit of Austin city council's debate on the MLS stadium. The floor was opened to community input at 9 am on a Wednesday morning and the only people who spoke were a disgruntled veteran who called the mayor "hoss," an InfoWars lunatic and a few other nuts. It made Parks and Rec look like a documentary. I wish more people would participate in city government because the crazies are always there.
The Republican party would burn the country to the ground before allowing national control of voter registration. The issue would, by itself, be more inflammatory than immigration, guns and taxes combined IMO. A lot of Dems would object also but many would support the idea.
The RNC would absolutely fight it. The DNC would fight it just as hard. If people find Voter ID laws restrictive, how do you think they will react if the Federal Government mandated proof of citizenship to vote? When one gets down to the nuts and bolts of voter registration, it becomes very subjective. Is voting a right? Or is it a privilege? Should it only be reserved for US Citzens or those who have a legal interest in the country? Voting has always been treated as a privilege. This has led to countless forms of abuse. Until we make it a right, there is not much that can be done about the abuse.
I strongly agree with the gist of your post, but I just want to add that there are times you would have a hard time finding a place to stand at those Austin city council meetings. I wish participation was much greater on a daily basis, and not just in Austin. This city has a history of having a lot of local political involvement. Of course, some member of the Lege from Lubbock will then push through a law targeting just Austin that reverses the outcome of local control, something the GOP has no interest in, regardless of the lip service they give it. Not only that, but it's done due to campaign contributions from developers. It can be quite frustrating.
It's a No True Scotsman argument. He defines the right as champions of individual liberty and therefore the left as standing against individual liberty (either for authoritarianism or communism or some other form of collectivism). So, if a person is shown to be an authoritarian, he would have to be by this reckoning a leftist. Even if he doesn't look like a leftist, walk like a leftist, or quack like a leftist.
National Socialists were as "socialist" as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is "democratic." The Hitler was a liberal leftist crap has come up here before and is gaining popularity in the fever swamps. Our right wing brethren don't like being aligned with fascists. And before they bring up the Hitler quote that Nazis “are socialists...mortal enemies of the present capitalist economic system...” just be aware that it was actually Strasser who said it and Hitler had him killed.
