"There’s nothing unusual about a new Cabinet secretary coming to office inclined to favor a different policy direction, soliciting support from other agencies to bolster his views, disagreeing with staff, or cutting through red tape. Of course, some people may disagree with the policy and process. But until now, at least, this much has never been thought enough to justify a claim of bad faith and launch an inquisition into a Cabinet secretary’s motives," Gorsuch wrote.

Ross has said he added the citizenship question in order to provide the Justice Department with more data for enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. However, opponents of his decision say it will prompt many in immigrant communities to fail to return their Census forms, resulting in an undercount that reins in the political strength of urban areas with large immigrant populations and bolsters the representation of areas with largely white, older residents.

    _________

What specifically do you disagree with from Gorsuch?

The danger of your last sentence and its ill-intent to the very Voting Rights Act Ross mentions should have counseled gorsuch and any fair-minded justice to take the exact opposite position he (and thomas) took. But instead, he shows he has no concern about immigrant (including LEGAL immigrants) and other minority population voting. Instead, he shows he rules in a very partisan manner... much as he was questioned in his confirmation hearings. Thecabinet secretary's motives are not beyond question, they are an extension of this administration and president's motives. Gorusch shows he is simply a rubber stamp for this president. Again, a point made in his confirmation hearing.

I’m trying to understand why you feel this way. Gorsuch didn’t say that the cabinet secretary’s motives are beyond question. He said there is no reason at this time to launch an inquiry into the motives of the secretary.

Also, this question is already being used by the census community survey. Does that change your opinion of things? They have some data on how people respond or don’t respond to the question from that. What from this article makes you feel that this is a rubber stamp from Gorsuch? It seems as if the fears aren’t necessarily based in reality. I don’t really see anything that shows lack of concern for immigrant communities.

    http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tan...the-census-bureau-is-planning-to-ask-in-2020/

“Ross said the census form would use the same wording as what is already used in the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, which asks respondents to check one of five categories to describe their citizenship status. Three categories apply to people who are U.S. citizens at birth: born in the U.S., born in a U.S. territory, or born abroad with at least one U.S. citizen parent. People who say they are a naturalized U.S. citizen are asked for their naturalization year. The fifth category is “not a U.S. citizen.” The survey does not ask whether noncitizens are legally in the country.”

“The California lawsuit quoted a 2017 Census Bureau memo that reported a recent rise in immigrants’ fears about the confidentiality of their personal information in surveys and focus groups, with some citing Trump administration actions intended to reduce unauthorized immigration. But the Ross memo says there is no “definitive, empirical support” for the claim that putting a citizenship question on the 2020 census would reduce response rates. The memo quoted data on the share of people who did not answer the question on the American Community Survey, including 11.6% to 12.3% of Hispanic respondents in 2013-2016, but it said there were “similar nonresponse rate ranges” for other questions on that survey.

However, the Ross memo acknowledged that many noncitizens do give incorrect answers to the citizenship question. Quoting a Census Bureau analysis, it said that among noncitizens whose responses to census questions about their citizenship status could be matched with other government records about them, about 30% erroneously said they were citizens.”

The American Community Survey is only submitted to 3.5 million households and is not used to determine federal funding and the number of representatives. The addition of a "citizenship test" in the census can suppress immigrant completion of the census. This new effort to add it (hasn't been part of the census since the 50's) is an obvious effort of the trump admin to reshape the political map in their favor by funneling federal money and power to states with less immigration. And this administration has shown no reason to trust them.

During the confirmation hearings, kavanaugh was believed to hold positions that suggest he would protect this president. This case shows those concerns were valid.

Longform article on Roberts's history with voting rights. Should scare anyone that expects the Supreme Court to side with Dems if it comes to that.

Chief Justice Roberts’s lifelong crusade against voting rights, explained

He has fought to undermine voting rights his entire career.

Supreme Court today just gutted the Voting Right Act to where it pretty much means nothing. It is now legitimized for states to suppress the vote as far as they want to go. This will lead to states like Texas and Florida taking it even further to the point where voting will be unrecognizable in most of the country.

This Supreme Court is owned by dark money, and corrupt billionaires who want to buy elections, and enact apartheid rule so they can keep from paying taxes, and buy another yacht. That's pretty much it. We will lose our democracy from under our nose just because some rich assholes want to remain rich beyond belief.
