It's not for his benefit really (though it seems he really enjoys the rally's), it's for Cruz. Texas is somewhat in play and Trump is coming to invigorate the base to get out and vote. Prominent Democratic and Republican politicians both do this all the time.
Keeping control of Congress is important. Hes trying to help keep the Republican resurgence that started with the Kavanaugh confirmation going strong until 11/6/18. Plus, he really enjoys campaigning.
it's synergistic that Trump, his handlers and his GOP enablers have spent the last few weeks tripling down on his toxic, xenophobic racist bullshit and are planning on spewing some more at the Toyota Center. After all, if we see an immigrant in a Rockets uniform, be he African, Asian, or even....Muslim ,we pretty much go straight to hanging the guy! That must have appealed to Miller, Neilsen, etc: But on the bright side, maybe Kevin McHale will return to the Toyota Center, that will be super fun!

He's been to Montana 3 times in less than 2.5 months...a state with about 1 million folks. Oh, and we also have a very vulnerable Incumbent Democrat Senator John Tester up for re-election (3 point margin before Kavanaugh nonsense)
It isn't really about the rally. It's simply a chance for Trump to stroke his own ego. He loves talking in front of adoring crowds. That's it.
