And a lot of people replied: "Speak for yourself."

And besides the money saved by taxpayers, there is the principle of the cuts: to stop gouging taxpayers, or at least grant them a little relief.

It would be spent to feed and house starving and homeless senior citizens. Better to spend the money with SS and prevent that problem from becoming too large rather than spend it after the problems have already happened.

That assumes that the market wouldn't have solved that problem and that people would be as irresponsible about their retirement if there was no safety net. I'm not going to make those assumptions. Also, you are assuming that it wouldn't be solved more cheaply without SS.....the entire discretionary budget of the US is roughly equivalent to SS spending.

I don't support the tax cuts or GWB's tax cuts in 2000 eliminating the budget surplus.

Im tired of hearing about the income gap. Rich people live off investments. The stock market has seen tremendous growth the last 25 years. Salaries and wages cant keep up. The income gap is fueled by the stock market

The stock market can benefit most people.

I think the tax liability per income class currently is very fair as far as percentage of income. The wealthy only got a 2% cut. Corporate tax rates are the problem

We don't have to make assumptions. People are terrible about saving for retirement, especially the working class.

You may be tired of hearing about the income gap but it is a serious problem and has been one of the biggest indicators of problems throughout history.

The assumptions I made are very safe assumptions to make and backed up by our nation's history.

That's because they believe that they have a safety net that is Social Security that will take care of them, take away that perceived safety net and people would act differently.

Either way, my point wasn't to eliminate Social Security, just scale it back along with the other massive programs that are bankrupting the country until a time that the debt can be controlled. I know the knee jerk reaction is to talk about dead senior citizens in the streets any time you talk about being even a little bit responsible fiscally.....and that's why you have a fiscally irresponsible party and a laughably fiscally irresponsible party with no serious alternatives.

trump cut taxes and increased spending. you say you dont want to be gouged, but you have no problem kicking the can down the road and screwing over your children and future generations...seems pretty selfish to me.

not hard to see why he went bankrupt multiple times...the question is why so-called fiscal conservatives think trump is one of them or why things will go different this time.

No, they wouldn't. Were you not here for 2008? People are not fiscally responsible. The world has changed so much. We used to have pensions, now few do. People used to buy one house and live there forever, now people buy multiple homes in their lifetime. I agree 100% that the government shouldn't be responsible for their irresponsibility, but we both know they will take action to fix it. Just a matter of being proactive vs. reactive, and by being proactive we aren't being unfair to those who were responsible.

How would you roll back SS?

    --Raise retirement age(s)
    --tax SS benefits more
    --lower (reduce) benefits
--means test for need (politically tricky but...)
--quit spending SS on stupid stuff (Title 4-D)

And that's just off the top of my head.

Screw the old people. They are hardcore republicans, but they are the most dependent on SS and Medicare.

It was a problem not only then but throughout history. That includes the Roman Empire, Renaissance, Middle Ages, etc. There are people starving in our nation as we speak.

Who it's on doesn't matter when you have a huge increase in starving, sick, and homeless seniors. This is a way to prevent that. Furthermore, Seniors that invested for their future savings could still be ruined by an ill-timed stock crash. So even those that were taking precautions, saving, and working for the future on their own could still be screwed.
