I suspect family lore might have informed the idea she had of her heritage, but the DNA test wasn't a winning look, especially when the Cherokee define their citizenship solely from tracing ancestry to the Dawes Roll, many of which on it were married into the tribe or freed slaves who joined in generations before. An equitable distinction, I might add, that was made to differentiate Cherokee identity as being a participant in a tribe rather than an ethnicity.

I have quite an affinity for the Yoruba (beats and chord progressions, folklore, my love of Hakeem Olajuwon and Fela Kuti) but knowing some Nigerian slang and 23andme results showing my .1% SubSaharan African results would not give me much to claim membership.

It's fair to criticise a public person that benefited from their claims, whether that's Trump's supposed business acumen or Warren's Cherokee ancestry. I frankly never had a reason to question them until she doubled down on a defense that hurt her own credibility. Claiming to be a member of a group when you don't know how that group defines its members is definitely a gaffe.

For the record, she specifically stated that she wasn't claiming to be a member of the Cherokee nation.

Yes, her move was still a gaffe. I agree with that.

Cher offers a tribute to partial native Americans.

Sadly for Elizabeth Warren, it comes nowhere close to applying to her.

It's funny to me that E Warren making a seemingly honest/ignorant mistake of bridge-too-far with her native american ancestry claims 30 years ago is some type of disqualifying event, meanwhile D Trump has a miles long laundry list of transgressions one thousand times worse yet he is an infallible demi-god to so many rubes.

Disagree with Warren's policies all you want, but from a character perspective, this is a non-issue.

It serves to illustrate the enormous credibility and accountability gap between D and R right now. Fart in church as a D and you will have to explain yourself for months. Shoot a man on 5th avenue as an R and you're given a promotion.

The Obama-Trump voters are watching this.

im loling at all the trump supporters/defenders who are so upset by warren claiming native american heritage, but seemingly have no problem with the barrage of lies, half-truths and misleading statements from trump himself.

im not saying youre wrong to criticize warren, but just wanted to point out that you are bunch of hypocrites.

right now there are two active threads about this issue - but no thread talking about the fact that trump lied to the american people about not having any business dealings with the saudis after he already bragged about how much business he does with them.

also, trump said in a 60 minutes interview this week that he is "not a baby". that is clearly not true. warren is more native american than trump is an adult.

I heard that quote on the radio on the radio today -- I definitely missed it. I agree that it didn't need to be a big deal but she turned it into a major gaffe.

Let me explain the problem in this logic; Trump has set the bar so low that its largely irrelevant to discuss this. He is President. He is not running for President anymore. The past is the past and unless something comes up that will convince Congress to remove him from office, he will be our President for 2 more years. This isnt defending Trump. This isn't attacking Trump. Its just the facts. We should be discussing his policies, not his past experience with a hooker, or his tax returns, or if he previously had business with the Saudis or what Melania is wearing or any other stupid ****.

When people stoop to his level, they always lose. Always. The principle stands. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

2020 stands for the Democrats to lose. Its in their pocket to win, but if the play Trumps stupid games, they lose. All Trump needs to do is maintain status quo. Regardless of who or why the economy is great, all that matters for Trump is that its still doing just as good in 2 years. We have no major conflicts. Things are going pretty good for the average American.

All the Democrats needs to do is put a moderate, respectful individual who will at least acknowledge the average American, its an easy win. If they get baited into taking DNA test in exchange for a wager or any other ignorant tactic of Trumps, they have a reasonable chance to lose. Stand on principle. Dont stay stupid **** Trump would say like "when they go low, we will kick them" .

Word on the street is that Warren dropped her coffee mug this morning and said ... a bad work ... in public. The SCW concern troll snowflakes are clutching their pearls.

I love that you guys are repeat spamming the same articles and memes that were posted a handful of posts previously.

Shows just how little you are actually thinking about this, that you can't even be bothered to glance up the page before you copy/paste something from wherever you take your marching orders.

Did she ever apply for tribal citizenship? If not, why does Cherokee nation care?

National Indigenous Women's Resource Center might care.
