First impressions are that it seems more like the type of deal Gary Cohn would draw up than Donald Trump. We need to see the details though to really have an opinion on it. He’s smart though to basically take NAFTA, tinker with it a bit on a few areas, and not change much. Which is what he should have done with the ACA. Given how globalist this deal is, I doubt Trump had that much involvement in the details of the deal. Which is probably what his team preferred. You just go worry about NFL players and Mexicans. Let us do your actual job for you.
Just for the record, this deal was on his desk the day he took office, because Obama's team had negotiated it. Trump is taking credit AGAIN for another mans work. DD
First, congrats to Trump. I might have to stop saying he only blows deals up instead of making them. I am a little tired of his dog and pony show where he says something is the worst of all time, makes minor revisions, and then says it's the best. NAFTA was 25 years old and due for an overhaul. Any president would have led a modernization deal in his place that would achieve basically the same thing he did. Obama had done it already in that the TPP was going to replace NAFTA, he just ran out of time on getting it sealed. Still, Trump seems to have actually followed through (though, knowing him, it might be premature to say so), which is more than I had hoped of him, so congratulations. Here's one. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-obama-trade-deal_us_5bb292b9e4b00fe9f4f99ec7
We'll see exactly what is all in it, but does seem like a move just to get a "win" even though it isn't a major change. From what I had seen before, I feel Mexico is the big winner, granted what is good for Mexico & Canada is generally good for the United States which is why NAFTA existed in the first place. At the end of the day, it is good news.
Agreed on Trump lambasting things and turning around and hyping them when he gets involved on the least bit. That being said he is like a used car salesman admittedly
I really do not think that it is going to make much of a difference. I am not a big fan of the extension of drug protections. I do not really see any major changes, especially for as big a deal as Trump made this out to be. Perhaps it turns out to be a better deal, or a worse deal.... a lot of time we don't know for years.
Minor changes, including a name change. The name change was probably more important to trump as he now gets to say he got rid of NAFTA and his base will fall for it.
Reminds me of when same group didnt know that ACA and Obamacare were same policy Sadly ignorance is a chronic disease that many suffer from in the US.
Love the structure of this post. "Trump is like a used car salesman. That being said, he is like a used car salesman."
The Canadian proposal on last Thursday and The Donald's counter proposal to Canada last Friday were already on the desk during Obama's term? Source?
the trumpified NAFTA means that China will have less cards to play with in its future trade negotiations w the US
Wouldn’t it e nice if Trump could say something thing like: “We continued to work on what the previous administration was trying to do. We made improvements and got Canada and Mexico to buy in.” Or something similar....
The Donald is out politicianing seasoned politicians. Since politicians aren't gonna change and people are and will continue to be stupid, don't be mad if he wins again. Be mad at the DNC and the Dems for not finding a certifiable winning candidate. The corrupt DNC choice of Hilary along with Biden not running blew it. Best chances like Biden, Bernie, Warren are really old. The good ones like Gillibrand won't even run. But anyway, plenty of time to talk about 2020 later. Back to new nafta, we'll see. These things take time to see the real impact regardless of any proclaimed victories at this point.
see my previous post but what politician do you know would do that. even obama wouldn't miss the political marketing of something like that.
The article I linked earlier argues that Obama's TPP deal would have replaced NAFTA. Mexico and Canada would be members as would other Pacific nations. And, the TPP had many of the modernization elements in it that were used in the USMCA deal. The biggest difference aside from breadth, according to that link, is the automotive content provisions in this deal. Even the dairy provisions Canada was concerned about ended up with the TPP's construct. So, in this but-for world in which the TPP went through, our deal with Mexico and Canada would look the same except that more of a car's parts would have to be from North America. Nah, I'm still going to be mad. More at Americans for being so stupid than at the Donald. There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again. But, I'll probably still be mad at Trump too. People being dumb is no excuse for being a total asshat.
I've always said that the most politically smart thing that Trump could do as president was take the Obama accomplishments, change only minor things, re-brand them as his own, and he'd be adored as a great president to half the country that liked Obama more than they'd ever give him credit for.... just needed a Rich White Guy to be the face of those accomplishments. The only problem for him politically now, other than a few items such as NAFTA, he really hasn't do so which is why he's so unpopular. Healthcare being the biggest blunder. He should have taken ACA, re-instated the risk corridors, allowed for drugs to be sold over state lines, etc., and called it Trumpcare. But no.... Because he's an idiot on the details, he let Congress try their hand at it, and they failed to the point where the only thing they could do was sabotage it enough to try and get the American Public to believe going back to Bush era health care is the best bad option for them.... still not working out for them on this front.
