I do feel like the Republican brand post Trump gained a new audience previously under the bucket of independents. Basically those cynics that hate everyone in politics and see Trumpism as a welcome tool to blow the whole place up.

Then you have really a small percentage of traditional Republicans that aren’t team players in the end to get their conservative agenda through.

There are a few like Steve Schmidt’s that left the party but they are few and far between. I suspect the reason this is higher than past years is because of the support of the synical “independents”.

Overall though, all the other data suggests the 60% majority still is growing in the direction of progressive liberal policies. there’s just less true independents during the Trump era.

This is a fairly flawed analysis - one data point doesn't make a trend. It could very well be an outlier.

This section of the report tells you all you need to know, and confirms my suspicion. These numbers increased because of so-called "independents" who Trump grabbed like IPAman just admitted.

This report though doesn't say anything about the percentages of Americans who align towards progressive policies though. Especially socially which has been growing for decades.

The report just confirms more of what we already know... that there are really no true independents anymore if there ever were before (I think people lied about being independent before to have it both ways in social circles). People have become super tribal post 2016 Trumpism, and are more emboldened to be who they want to be politically.... especially on social & racial issues.

To the Gallup poll, I can only bring one thing to mind in making sense of it.

Most independents I know are Republicans through and through, they just like to pretend otherwise. I do know some legit Libertarians that those independents pretend to be, but they vote Republican and defend them constantly despite how shitty they are.

We see that here constantly. Give Russialegend some credit. He might be the only poster here who admits he voted for Trump.

The same is said on the left too where there’s was this claim of independence to be safe socially among their circle of acquaintances but in their daily lives they certainly believe in Gay Rights, women’s rights, right to vote, and sensible healthcare reform to expand coverage.

It’s kind of sad though that there’s that middle ground lost. I live in TX with a very Trumpy family and all I see all day long on Facebook is how much they all hate People who vote like me, kill babies, hate Jesus, and how Im a communist.

I really don’t care though and won’t let that move me to the same grievances they have but it certainly makes the option of going to Vegas for Thanksgiving instead of hanging with these people who despise me more attractive.

I’d argue it was actually a good thing that we previously had such a large percentage of Americans before that had their beliefs, but at least claimed independence to try and live peacefully among people they know don’t agree with them.

Now the gloves are off and people simply don’t give a sh$&.
