    Hi

Nurse says it is an ischemic stroke

They're doing more work on him .

I am his only son. He has no one else but me.

What should I expect going forward? I am pretty ignorant about strokes.

Sorry about the news Outlier. Thoughts to you and your dad. I don't know anything about strokes...but you might try chatting with the nurses. In all of my hospital experiences, they are an invaluable source of information.

best of luck to you and your father.

It depends on many factors :age first then neuroimaging , location, size , infarct volume, and further neurologic exam.

if it's the first time ,fatality rate is significantly low &
from 12 hours to a week, a steady improvement is expected

Yeah, OP, there is an enormous range of possible outcomes, but you will know a lot very soon, for one, and he will probably improve a decent bit in the middle term, for another. That's my understanding for stroke survivors.

Take good care. Being an only child is really tough in times like these.

Sorry that you and your family are going through this. It is very variable. Recovery occurs within the first year. Speak with your neurologist regarding prognosis. PT/OT/speech therapy are very important. Best of luck brotha

My father had two strokes. One when he was 50, and the next one when was 55. He recovered fully each time. He is now 88 years old and going strong.

Strokes can be very minor, or very severe. Some of the new medications used today can make a huge difference if administered soon after the stroke.

    Good luck.

My best friend had a stroke last year and is completely paralyzed on his left side. He can speak but its really hard to understand unless he gets angry about something.

I have a coworker that has had two but you would have no idea. Recovery varies I guess.

Hang in there man. Be strong for your dad. Seeing you strong will make him worry less about you and relieve the stress.

A few years ago my mom had two strokes (not counting her TIA)within a couple of months of each other. After the second one we found out that she had afib, which causes irregular/rapid heart beat. Her doctor prescribe her with xarelto and she's been doing great ever since. Just be strong for your dad, keep him active and I'll be praying for you guys.

Sorry to hear bud. How's he doing now?

The range of severity of after symptoms can vary greatly based on extent of damage and time to treatment.

    Sorry to hear.

It all really depends on how soon he was able to get treated. With strokes the saying is "time is brain".

Depending on what region of the brain was affected, it is definitely oossposs to see some neurological decline (be it motor/sensory/aphasia/etc.)

Does anyone know of cheap care homes who may be able to take care of my dad? I can't be there 24/7 for him since I have work and I have a small space as a home... Unfortunately my dad doesn't have insurance either.
