I have avoided Nike for many of the same reasons you historically have. I think what they did in the past is terrible. While this may gain them some respect from some people it will alienate quite a few as well. I guess time will tell how much this effects their bottom line.

Nike is a global enterprise. offending people that call others snowflakes or crisis actors while being snowflakes and crisis actors themselves won't hurt the bottom line. What will destroy nike is nike copying Adidas with those ugly kanye shoes. It's like everything they do has that knit look to it. They got to go back and be more creative.

"nikes on my feet keep my cipher complete."

to all my people in queens bridge, god bless your life.

There was though, because reports say Adidas and Puma were after Kap and were waiting for his contract to expire. If they felt there was a risk of a rival brand using him then yes, they had to use him, and since he doesn't play for a team how else were they going to use him?

I don't think they care. As someone mentioned before, they are appealing to their actual consumer base, the people that help to make NIKE what it is...the people that brought Jordan's and Kobe gear, the people that made songs about getting a few pair of Air Force 1s.

In fact, they have an example of this already. Lebron James. Lebron has been super political and he hasn't hurt NIKE's brand one bit, has he?

Yeah, growing their profits, Dicks is really licking those wounds. Dicks same store sales are declining, but so are Academys. Cabela's was sinking before Bass Pro bought them out. Gander Mountain & Sports Authority both went bankrupt.

It has been a tough go in their market, but only Bass Pro seems to be in better shape than Dicks right now.

Agreed. I have hated Nike since they wanted to sign Hakeem. Hakeem said he would do it and help them design the shoe, but that it had to be affordable for anyone that wanted it and Nike wouldn't do it. That was when Hakeem switched to Spaulding who did comply with Dream's wishes. I've never liked Nike since then. The child labor and third world labor only added to it.

This is one mark in the positive for them but it doesn't erase everything else.

I was surprised that Nike took a position as well. However, the more I think about it, I think it is less of a risk than people think. They have studied their demographics and made a calculated decision. Also, I read recently where those under 35 overwhelmingly support Kaepernick and I suspect that is a large part of their market.

Kaepernick never would have remained relevant or become the huge star he is today without help from the President. I hope Kaepernick at least sends him a "thank you" card to his attention.

But are you idiotic enough to set fire to the shoes you've spent hundreds on per shoe? If you don't want them, give them away to a charity.

I've always been an Adidas guy but that's mostly because of my soccer background and they tend to have a little wider fit than Nike. I've never owned a pair of Nike soccer boots.

I hate Shaq, but did I love that he had affordable shoes, and his comeback to the $500 BBB shoes that real big ballers don't do that.

I had a pair of Dreams as a kid, and I have 6 pairs of Starbury's and had a couple of the apparel because I loved what he was doing. It was too bad when Steve & Barry's went under because that basically killed it, even though they maintained the brand online afterwards.

Being political (Lebron) and being perceived as being anti-America (Kap) are a huge leap apart.

Note: I am not calling Kap anti-American rather just noting what many people perceive about his protest.

Interesting that some NBA Players, Coaches, and Staff would take Qatar money to help PR boost a country built on slave labor. The participation and lack of outrage for said participation is very curious. I was told lives matter and DT is a white supremacist racist so I'm surprised NBA is okay being used as propaganda for a country where lives don't matter and where slavery is encouraged.

Also curious to find out Kap was getting paid this whole time. So brave to take a stand while making bank.

Which part of my post led you to believe that? I didn't even say I wouldn't buy nike. I will probably buy less but I have spent way too much on the stuff to burn it. I was excited when the nba went with the swoosh. I seriously buy a new pair of shoes every month. I give plenty to charity fyi

I have been reading that the boost line is very comfy so I will grab a pair or two.

The NFL CROWD did not and does not MAKE NIKE
Nike's popularity is in almost every OTHER SPORT but Football
No one is rushing to get the new TOM BRADYs
Nike BLEW UP based on BASKETBALL and TRACK AND FIELD and because of Serena TENNIS
They know where their bread is buttered

    A Basketball company at heart
and Kaep's protest is about helping the major consumers of basketball shoes

I think that's too bad that people perceive him that way but I really think NIKE doesn't care.

I think in the end most people don't care. Trump and others have made Kap a star ironically enough when he should have faded away as that one guy that had a few good years for the 49ers, played in a superbowl even, then became a backup QB that kneeled for some reason.

There was even an NBA player that did it, Abdul-Rauf. Did he get any million dollar deals? He's probably a jeopardy question at best (although he was a pretty decent player) your side created Kap and this whole thing honestly.

At the end of the day though I don't think people care enough for it to hurt Nike. You'll have a few people virtue signaling by burning their shoes or whatever and it's a topic for now but a year from now my guess is no one will strongly care about it either way. Just like no one should have cared about the kneeling.

They chose the side of the folks who want everything for free. I am curious to see how this works out.

    http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insigh...ies-where-african-americans-move-markets.html

Looks like they made a smart decision. I'm sure Nike has more data than you on this, I doubt they made a decision based on emotions first. They probably realize they aren't going to lose much and probably have internal data representing this fact.

I mean, the guy that is burning nike shoes on twitter is burning ONE pair of shoes. Some customer they've lost there. The virtue signaling will stop in about a week and Nike can start pushing out their Kap merchandise that a bunch of other athletes and rappers will openly market and throw their support behind...which will lead to a bunch of other young people buying the same merch.

Oh this...nevermind that this response has 0 to do with the actual thread. Make your own thread about slave labor then, no one is stopping you...btw...

Are you on a phone or computer? Have you checked to make sure that every part and component within hasn't been created by slave labor? Are you 100% sure?

I agree that they know more about it than me. I think it will be interesting. Time will tell. If I had to guess, I would think that sales will lag and then rebound around Christmas
