With the proliferation of sites like edx.org, and with companies like Microsoft jumping on board and offering free education tracks, the value of college will continue to dwindle. The "need" for college just doesn't exist for most jobs, with online learning being free.

I've taken classes from MIT, Stanford, Harvard, the University of Texas and others from my bedroom, in my underwear, at my own pace... all for free.

Me too, very fun! At present nobody gives two ***** when we interview for a job. LOL.

Your prediction was also made 25 years ago. MOOCs and all that. But we'll see. Could eventually come true.

I want to go to a college with 70% females. Texas State was only like 55-45 when I went.

I've worked for Microsoft, and they never even asked me about my education in my interview. And now Google, Apple, IBM and others no longer require a college education.

In the latest Joe Rogan podcast with Neil Degrasse Tyson, Neil talks about how there are two types of people. People with a thirst to learn who are continually open to new challenges, and the people who stop learning the day they left school. We need more of the first type.

With the rise of automation and advancement of technology, the only people that will have viable careers are those that continue to learn. Evolve or die... the days of learning one thing, and not needing to know anything else and being able to survive, are gone. Because someone else will go the extra mile, it is Darwinism at the intellectual level.

My father gave me great advice when I was in high school, and that was "If someone at work ever asks you if you know how to do something, tell them yes... because someone has written a book on how to do it in 30 days or less." Of course, this was the mid-90s, before YouTube, so now that advice is infinitely more powerful. My entire career trajectory is based upon this principle alone, where I am know as the guy who jumps in feet first on the most complex and unsolvable issues... because I have faith in my ability to "figure it out."

Every child in my family, I've let them know early on, that they should constantly be looking to solve problems on their own, and to continue to learn. If you start early on, it doesn't take long until they do it naturally. Hell, my mother who is in her mid-60s rarely calls me for help with her car, computer, or appliances around her house. Her first stop is YouTube now, and she only calls me if she gets stuck.

The point is, information is now democratized, and universities no longer control the intellectual progress of our society, technology does. Universities are an old, and outdated construct.

You are the exception, not the norm. And the dummies are breeding at a much faster rate so yes, a place to network , gain a fancy certificate or slack off and party will always be the norm for the next couple of centuries before anti intellectual anarchism due to widening income gaps takes place.

Colleges are getting too greedy. US Student Loan debt has now eclipsed $1.5 trillion. "Middle America" is finally wising up to the fact that the majority of higher education is a scam. It isn't going to happen overnight, but the masses will eventually stand up and say enough is enough.

I think that colleges are preying on minorities and inner city kids with "get rich schemes" that if they will just get that piece of paper, they'll make it out of their hoods... it is a lie. Getting $130,000 in debt for a Liberal arts degree won't get you a damn thing.

You are being naive, and it's these stats that matter to people. Only the top 1-5% of intelligence and/or work ethic can make it work like you did, the masses are the masses for a reason. All for profit institutions and corporations will target someone, somewhere...

False, wonder how greek life is still a thing, it's because class, credentials and networking still matter more than anything else in the workforce.
