    ...uh...

...I thought Chachi gave everybody his opinion at the last Republican National Convention...?

...well...everybody who cared about his opinion, anyway...there were almost as many people there as were at the Donald's inauguration...

Of course we all should respect the office and rank.

“You salute the rank, not the person”

-one of the best HBO series’

However the office of the presidency is a political position within our government. If you cannot dissent from a politician within our government, especially a politician who came to power by dividing the country to extremes by using tactics like racism, then we are no more a democracy than a pre WW2 European nation under the blanket of facism.

Is that what you think we owe the presidency OP? Did you demand such when Obama was president?

Why do people give a damn about what Tiger Woods thinks of Trump, they were buddies before, they will continue being buddies after.

Regardless what you think of Trump politically, you really think his rich celeb friends from before will starting crapping all over him in the media? would you do that do your friend, I know I wouldn't

Wise words that will likely go over the head of a lot of people making them angry. Either way though, even if he happens to be right, he's just a golfer.

Disparaging and mocking a sick person who needed/needs help is very classy.

I don't understand... Tiger just said we have to respect the office, not the president.

And hey, it's a pretty sweet office!

Which sickness? The cheating on wife/kids ("sex addition") illness that he went into "therapy" for? Or the alcohol and drug dependency that resulted in his arrest?

Okay but @KingCheetah didn't do that. He mocked a person with a back injury and a sleeping disorder whose medical treatment led them to become a drug addict. Someone who has been to rehab multiple times and is fighting to retain joint custody of his two kids. I'm not saying we should worship the guy but he needs help. All that said, USA Today is Sports not Politics and this shitty reporter asks **** questions after a round of golf in which Tiger has been playing better. I'm glad he answered the way he did, screw the media. And since when is treating people/office with respect a bad thing. What do you all teach your children when it comes to respect? Are you all raising more Donald Trumps?

...the larger implication of Tiger Woods' statement...homogenized as it is...

...is that we should, as a matter of practical application, separate the office from the office-holder. Our notion and model of democratic governance, reportedly, rests on such a tenet.

That has always been, more or less, a misunderstanding of the nature (one of the natures, rather) of our government. And also, I'm afraid, another way for those who would prefer to win a specious argument to keep their thumbs on the scale of civil discourse.

It often matters, very much, what type of individual occupies our collective representative and legislative offices at every level of government. The institution does not survive (or even really exist) sans the man or woman who currently adorns the mantle.

Some people talk almost ad nauseum about "government" being the problem...about "government" not being able to solve every problem of society...as if to say government (our American government, in particular) is somehow some entity other than a "representation" of our best or our worst selves...

Barbara Jordan once told a story about how Washington DC worked when she got elected to the U.S. House of Representatives back in 1972. She was an idealist and a crusader, and felt that most of her colleagues, at some point or another, harbored much the same sentiment and regard for the propositions offered through impartial jurisprudence, vigorous debate, and conscientious legislation, that our democracy provides. That may even have been true of some Senators or Representatives even through the course of their tenures.

She said that, inside of her first 6 hours at her new office on Capital Hill, she had received dozens of memos or requests to meet with lobbyists and moneyed interests...vying to purchase from her what many had come to believe was always on the market. She said she learned more about what turns people away from themselves (or maybe even, reveals what their loyalties always were, if we are to subscribe to the notion of the presence of nefarious opportunity not excusing nefarious behavior), than in all her prior years of civil service...

    from Wikipedia:
On July 25, 1974, Jordan delivered a 15-minute televised speech in front of the members of the
U.S. House Judiciary Committee.[14] She presented an opening speech during the hearings that were part of the impeachment process against Richard Nixon.[14] This speech is thought to be one of the best speeches of the 20th century.[15] Throughout her speech, Jordan strongly stood by the Constitution of the United States of America.

When I hear people talk about how unpatriotic Negroes are, or how ungrateful they are, or how much they don't care about this nation or how they're rotting the country away from the inside out after everything that's been done for them, I remember how often it fell to a Negro to be the conscience of a conscienceless society.

If not for people of quality and conviction and character and courage and restraint...I know just exactly where this nation would see me stand.

Yes, it does indeed matter who holds a public office in the stead and confidence of the public who placed them there. To me, at least.

None of us will survive very long if that is not the case. And I would in no way doubt that any of us deserved to.

Needs a serious renovation though. That wallpaper! Puh-lease. That old carpet probably stanks something awful too, especially with spilled taco bowl all over it.

OK, so the sex addiction excuse for cheating on his wife and kids is still OK to disparage and mock?

Tiger has to be careful what he says. He still makes more than $40 million per year endorsing products. Bad mouthing Trump would be bad for business. His business.
