Maybe not, but that doesn't take away the fact that the Rockets were IMMEDIATELY on the ball for this guy, even If no one else was. He will get a shot to play, I guarantee it.
The premise wasnt to say sign him to the max lil fella. Pump your sarcastic none basketball breaks lmao. My point is If you consider what his has (6'6 point guard with length to defend) instead of what he doesnt, you can see how he fits our system and what we need. He can post from the PG position and kick out to shooters as well guard 3-4 positions. He can run an offense from the 1,2, or 3 spot. IF he is WORKING on the 3 ball and is making progress that is a plus. That's the point. And the video shows that he is....
I have this feeling he could play a lot of "3" with us. We haven't had a playmaking wing since parsons.
I'm sure he is a fine person and working hard on his game etc... But statistically offensively and defensively he is in the bottom 2% of the league. Seems doubtful MCW could somehow become a net positive in 1 year.
Trajectory wise, I wonder if they see him as a Trevor Ariza. Ariza couldn't shoot for **** his first 6-7 seasons in the NBA. His first stint in Houston, we gave him the ball a lot and we let him drive with a poor handle and shoot with bad form (which is essentially MCW's whole career to this point). Looks like the volume of 3's Ariza took in Houston jumpstarted his acceleration out of being an atrocious 3pt shooter, almost like in-game practice. Maybe MCW hits over 30% of his 3's this year and his decent passing/rebounding become bonuses. I mean, MCW has made 25% of 539 3 point attempts in his career. His FT% was slightly better in his last 2 seasons than it was before. No one can shoot that much and continue being that bad that long. Maybe he's due for an uptick in 3p%. Would be nice. On the other hand, he lacks everything we do the most. 3's, pnr and defense are his worst attributes. It is good that we can improve his weaknesses but do we have time for that? Shouldn't a contender be milking strengths instead of patching up weaknesses? He's on a 1 year contract. Say he develops. Is that really of any use this season?
Certainly, the Rockets had a plan for what they were looking for, they knew the price range they could spend on certain roles, so they didn't have time to waste. The team knows what they are looking for from him, and they also know him doing anything significantly better than he has in the past is not expected, but is a hope. Whether he can fulfill the is what we are now waiting to see, and it would be great if he does, but of course I think the baseline expectation should be that he will not be a good player and then if he is decent enough to even stick in the rotation and have him produce fairly well, awesome.
The first stint I remember of Ariza figuring out his shot was when was just straight up on fire through the Lakers playoff run. He was a low 30% shooter during the season, but then he just kind of put it together in the playoffs and was beyond hot. Maybe that trajectory happens. MCW does sadly have age against him. Ariza had shot 32.2% 3PT on 3.5 attempts for 4 seasons before he finally hit 36% with Washington at 27. This season is MCW's age 27 seasons, he doesn't have any similar trajectory, let alone anything like Ariza's 20+ game stretch in the 2009 playoffs, so him jumping up over 30% would be a much bigger jump than Ariza, but it would be HUGE even if he can just hit a below average but good enough for him 32-33%
Morey was also all over Royce White and Lin.... let's see before we make any decision whether he is good or not... hopefully he turns into this years gerald green...
I just don't know what people expect from the 4th, maybe 5th guard on the depth chart. Obviously it's too much, obviously. But I'm a Rockets fan, so I choose to see the potential at the outset of a contract. You folks ALREADY dogging this kid, you're the ones that are going to show up with false praise when he saves the day too. So fake. Just don't know what's really going on in your life that's so negative you have to come to clutchfans in the middle of August to dog on a veteran depth free agent signing. Seriously, you need to log off and examine your life. MCW, Ennis, Caboclo, Qi, throw Capela in too. Lots of young, long, defensive potential to a team who 2 months ago was worried about losing Ariza's defense.
I think MCW is going to look good in the Rox system. Why? Because he will be able to play his game which is pushing the tempo. The question left is, will he get some playing time? Probably not for the most part.
We don't push the tempo. We had one of the slowest teams in the NBA from the second half of the season into the playoffs. Also, we're not trying to change it. It's by design. We have excellent iso players and the Warriors don't like slowing the game down. If MCW is going to succeed here, it's going to be by doing what we already do. We always have at least 2 of Paul/Harden/Gordon on the floor at the same time. Unlikely that MCW will handle the ball much, if at all.
I see MCW as a sort of Corey Brewer for this team. Long, rangy guy to give us some energy and defense, and to brick some corner threes. It will be extremely good for his career to be in this system, because he NEEDS to be off the ball to survive in this league. Defensive specialist. If he can ever hit 33-35% of his threes, holy cow we got a roleplayer for nothing.
