My company is going through an integration/merge with another company. I work as a project manager currently. My manager called me out of the blue for a course as an Export compliance officer deputy. He said I would just be a backup to this main person and it would still be project management. There are a lot of overlapping skills at the company we are moving to. Is this a demotion and should I start looking elsewhere? Thanks.

How the hell should we know?

It doesn't sound good, but your guess is as good or better than any of ours (unless your boss is on CFans).

    Best of luck to you.

Never stop looking elsewhere. The time to look for a new job, is when you have one - it gives you power. Companies give you no allegiance, and you shouldn't give them any either. Also, someone who moves jobs every 2-3 years, will likely end up making far more money over their careers in doing so.

For your current situation, mergers are difficult to gauge, you never know which corporate culture will reign supreme in the end. I'd certainly start looking and play it by ear. I've been through a few mergers, and left the company each time - usually the first 18-24 months are a pain in the ass.

Tricky. I'd stick with it but remain vigilant. Have resume up to date ready to roll at a moments notice. Good luck OP

It could be they need to cut staff but they like you .

They could be training you to take that persons job.

Doesn't hurt to see it through and start prepping your resume in the mean time.

They likely consider you as an outlier.
