[Marks] Houston will create a $1.54M (+$100k) trade exception by sending the expiring contract of Chinanu Onuaku to Dallas.
Big pickup for swyguy's Mavs. Before you start a thread swy, no, the Rockets are still not worried about the Mavs now that they got Luka Doncic and Chinanu Onuaku.
This was a move that was always going to happen. I am glad that the Rockets were able to get it done without losing a draft pick. No idea why Woj would think that Dallas would pay US to take on a player that the Mavs are likely to release before the season starts. Last i looked this is going to save the Rockets 4-5 million dollars.
There *could* be some pain, later: Keep in mind, paying $1.5m in cash considerations is $1.5m less Morey will have to spend on draft night to buy picks. We will no longer be able to pay Max for a pick, like GSW did to get Jordan Bell.
Good riddance, he sucked. Good to potentially improve our 2nd round draft pick in 2020 in the process.
Dallas gets the right to swap. So no matter what, we will get a worse 2020 pick than the Dallas' GSW pick.
Lol. This is gonna be a 59-60 swap. Worthless. But as someone else mentioned we have to get something back in a trade. So this is that “something”.
You really feared Morey would do both vs waiving Onuaku. Or did you just make that up now? Be honest. Willing to bet Morey would rather have just waived him (and saved the $1.5m cash for spending on Draft Night), but Tilman wanted to save tax money. Just because it makes sense to save on taxes, doesn't mean waiving wouldn't have been better for roster building. *All* this is is a luxury tax dump, combined with freeing up a roster spot. I don't like dipping into the Draft Night cash pool, as that's how Morey historically get his best picks...by buying them.
Since Onuaku is an expiring contract, the *only* reason to pay cash to move him vs waiving him is financial....it saves money. However, the logic of saving tax money doesn't offset the logic of waiving in order to maintain maximum roster building abilities. That $1.5m is money taken out of Morey's Till that he uses to buy draft picks. I'm a firm believer Morey would have preferred just waiving him to retain maximum cash for Draft Night, like he always does. This smells like Tilman forced him. When is the last time Morey has ever paid cash considerations to unload a player vs buying one.
