It's interesting, Deck. Mrs. B-Bob and I were talking about this. We're both in the university business (her more in research), but we've both noticed the current young 'uns think it is silly to take speech, presentation, or voice lessons. Some young women (and men too) especially like to end all their declarative statements as if asking question -- you know what I'm talking about. But they consider it quaint and outmoded (in some cases, "patriarchal" and insulting) to consider refining their speech, voice or diction.

That could be totally irrelevant to the thread topic, but the days of people practicing and refining oratory may go the way of the Edsel. Or, I mean. It could, like, totally go away? As in, um, who needs that stuff? Oh completely. Exactly, right? That's something my like grandparents used to do!

Certainly enjoyed the post, B-Bob, and realized what probably made me think of that young woman, soon to be in Congress, seeking help with how to use her voice effectively. I remember my mother telling me about taking classes after school in "elocution," something my grandmother insisted she take. She was in grade school and you had to pay for the lessons, which must have made it important to my grandparents, considering their financial wherewithal. They couldn't afford for her to go to college, but she was clearly intelligent and my grandmother wanted her to sound like an educated woman as an adult. I still have an old photograph of her standing on the counter at their diner, all dressed up (it was a requirement for the classes) and with a big smile on her face. Apparently, she enjoyed doing it. People today have no idea what life was like in the late '20's and early '30's, which is when these classes had to be taking place. Parents that cared and could manage it would do anything to give their child a "leg up" as a young adult. I was lucky that my late mother and grandmother enjoyed talking about those days, and I was very interested, even as a kid.

It'll make a comeback. There's inherent power in oratory skills. That's why Trump drew crowds and Hillary drew minds.

My candidate for the left's Trump is gwenth paltro and her disgusting company. So much wrong there, i.d.i.o.t.

So, you start by insulting the intelligence of someone who has studied politics a LOT more than you ever will...

...continue by making an assumption not backed by anything she has ever said...

...and lastly, attempt to muddy the waters yourself by claiming that your personal definition of "socialism" is shared by anyone actually in politics today.

Insults, assumptions, and obfuscations by bobby, or, in other words, Monday.

Absolutely. Clearly his studies didn't help him if he can't tell the difference between Democratic Socialism and Social Democracy. You may be impressed with his credentials but he just has a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, it's not like he has any kind of advanced degree...and hell I satisfied a minor in Political Science before I decided to go in another direction so there's probably not much difference in the amount we've studied the subject....only it seems I actually learned something while he didn't. On top of that, a person could have a Bachelor's degree in mathematics but it wouldn't make it any better if they were trying to say 1+1 was 7.

I've been over this with you crazy kids multiple times by now and I've showed you quotes from her along with the stances of organizations she's affiliated with that are pretty conclusive on the issue. If you choose to remain ignorant on this topic, as you are on most topics, that's your decision.....but it's not my fault.

I wasn't using my own personal definitions, I was using the standard definitions that are used by all....except for those who try to make up their own. Try to do better kiddo, you just keep embarrassing yourself and it's just pathetic.

I agree. BUT that seems to be the direction the left is heading. Those on the right are fine with this. It is those on the left that should be a bit concerned.

How long have you been in Congress again?

Some people study a topic after they leave college. People who work in government would be examples of those who have learned far more than you are ever likely to.

You do realize it is likely I'm older than you, right?

"Stances of organization she's affiliated with" =/= stances she has taken herself, no matter how desperately you wish they were.

I'm not the one who should be embarrassed in this conversation, boy. I guess you just don't have enough awareness to figure it out.

The voice thing could be attributed to being Puerto Rican in NYC, that's how they sound. I still stand by my claim from the classic hangout thread that U.S women with southern accents & valley girl accents> U.S women with Eastern Accents, most specifically NY and Boston. I like my southern twang, a little bias.

    Agreed.
If this is the ideology of your local constituents, then run on that platform. This, however, wont win a national election.

Clearly, we're living in different worlds. Democrats are moving to the extreme left, and are no longer merely "liberals." They are now socialists, and in fact declare themselves to be so. It *used to be true* that both parties "argued around the 50-yard line," but that isn't true any longer.

@GladiatoRowdy Could you please stop quoting Bobby the way you do? Some of us put him on block long ago in order to make this BBS as a whole readable and you are hoisting this dead horse on us!

Don't worry, some of them will later want the kind of job that pays a decent salary, go enroll is a business school, and suddenly be very gung-ho about the minutiae of persuasive speech.

That's an incredibly lazy appeal to authority. Bernie being in congress for decades doesn't mean that he's using words correctly....so try again.

Clearly that is not the case when it comes to Bernie. Now, for sure, he'd know a LOT more about being in the Senate than I would, but him being in the Senate hasn't helped him understand the meaning of those terms.

That is very unlikely....and even if you happen to be older, it's not apparent by the way you conduct yourself or the amount of knowledge and wisdom you demonstrate having....so in short, if you do happen to be older than me, then you should be embarrassed.

Notice how I said both stances she's taken AND those taken by organizations she's proudly a member of dipshit.

Populism is en vogue. I thought the GOP moving to the far right would be bad for them but that hasn’t been the case yet.

I hope you don't take offense, but it just isn't my job to worry about your ignore list. You're welcome to ignore me too, if you want to completely avoid seeing anything he says.

    Clearly.

Not according to the evidence, which shows (using numbers and measurements rather than the assumptions you're relying on) that since the 1960s, the Democrats have moved a little to the right while the Republicans have moved WAY to the right.

This is an established fact among those who actually study these things.

Democrats are not socialists and whoever told you they are is lying to you.

There are only two Democrats that I know of who have "declared" themselves to be socialist and only one, Bernie Sanders, actually holds federal office.

You're correct, they now argue around the 40 yard line on the right.

No, it is a comparison between the experience you have with Congress and the experience that Sanders has. Sanders has studied politics dramatically more than you ever will, most likely, which isn't "appeal to authority," it is merely a fact.

Says the guy who makes assumptions about what people believe rather than actually listening to what they say.

    June 11, 1970

You're the one operating on assumptions and the musings of bullshit artists. I will never be embarrassed when the facts are on my side, as they are here.

Which you have been unable to quote...

...which she hasn't endorsed in any way publicly...

    ...and the obligatory insult.

It is hilarious that in this very statement, you chastise me for my immaturity.

Keep trying, I love watching you flail.

Fair enough. I like your posts and normally wouldn't request something like that if it didn't seem like no extra effort from what you're already doing. What makes Bobby so annoying is the sheer volume and persistence of his ignorance. It's like arguing with a racquetball court.
