Here's my serious two cents. I volunteered heavily at the Fort Bend County Women's Center years ago, working directly with the children involved. Their mothers are legitimately afraid to speak out against those that they believe still love them, and probably in their sick minds, they may do so. The court system, rightfully so, places the burden of proof on the prosecution, but if the victim refuses to speak because their significant other is typically their source of financial stability... there's no case. The biggest red flag here is the suspension without being appealed. Plus, Luhnow saying Osuna is "remorseful." Something happened. Stuff like this is real. There's a personal element to this as well, which gets me riled up. I have a cousin around five years ago killed by her boyfriend as well as an acquaintance a few years back. I think people do deserve a second chance and can reform, but performance on the field should not be a symbol of redemption in life.... which is often portrayed as such unfortunately. With that, I'll refrain from further comment.
Your wrong if you think this about me. I let the courts play out before I make judgements like this and even then believe in 2nd chances in life, not even in situations like this because I've been given 2nd chances. For the record I've never laid a hand on a woman in my life. Although throughout the yrs I've had women hit/slap me.
This. A lot of people would shake their head. The reality is that these fans and team officials claiming they wouldn’t take on Osuna are being hypocrites. The Dodgers have kept Puig with all of his issues including domestic violence. The Red Sox still have Steven Wright after he hit his wife. The Yankees have Aroldis Chapman. Indeed all the teams that commented on Osuna have players that have been charged with domestic violence. My point isn’t to say the Astros shouldn’t receive heat from fans or even the media. My point is that a productive player will get a second chance. Other than maybe a couple owners that have a strong personal aversion, teams will take chances on questionable people if the can help them win games.
Cool. That would make you unusual because people jump to conclusions all of the time. I tend to think the worst of people accused of domestic abuse, but I am biased.
I think it's the zero tolerance but we believe in second chances thing that makes it difficult to swallow. It's a very Donald Trump type statement.
Of course something happened. It is obvious that Osuna hit his girlfriend. He was arrested and lost half of his season and half his salary. The attorney for Osuna wants an agreement to be worked out where their is no trial or time served and he is going to get that. Jeff Luhnow and the Astros ownership group know that Osuna hit his girlfriend. The Astros decision makers also know that there are separate rules for better players. The only reason the Astros are overlooking Osuna’s conduct and taking the PR backlash is because they believe he will really help them win and ultimately most fans fame more about winning. Osuna isn’t a reclaimation project for the Astros. They don’t think he is a good person, he is there to win. Just own it and accept it.
Of course it is BS. Luhnow just cannot come out and say “zero tolerance unless you are really good”. I don’t mind Luhnow getting heat, but this BS being fed by Luhnow is the same the Cubs fed everyone when they dealt for Chapman. The nasty reality is that teams in a position to win will over look really terrible things to win. I admit that I will still root for the Astros. I honestly hope Osuna saves game 7 of the World Series for the Astros. He will never be a favorite of mine but I am excited to see him pitch. Also as a side note.... the Astros almost dealt for Osuna LAST YEAR at the deadline but the cost was very high. I posted about it last year at the deadline. So the Astros interest in Osuna as a baseball player is and has been genuine.
Oh I agree. I think Luhnow really fumbled the PR though. Sounds he fumbled it with the clubhouse too. How do you not approach Verlander and Correa prior to making the trade? That's just not a smart move.
Agree, and especially if you talk to Altuve about it. You either talk to all of your veterans, talk to your player rep, or you say nothing to any of them. I think he should have talked to the veteran players about it. The last thing you do though is talk to ONE player and leave the rest out of it, especially when your clubhouse is so tight
TWell, my point is, Luhnow gets the benefit of the doubt for now, and I trust him to have properly vetted the guy. But if the vetting failed, then he should be held accountable by Jim Crane, Has Crane said anything yet? I'm still very serious and concerned because a ton of people on Twitter are still really angry, and I hope this doesn't lead to a lot of fans lost. Many angry fans (or now-former fans) view this move as valuing wins over morality and love the friendly clubhouse culture.
Outraged fans like yourself are actually paying more attention to the team at the moment. Considering that most of Houston left this team for dead when they were losing just 4 years ago, and now there are lines around MMP prior to every home game, I think they can handle fan turnover just fine provided they continue to win. Still can't believe you thought Luhnow answered to Reid Ryan... Ryan has nothing to do with the baseball decision side of the organization.
Again, wasn't the ability to talk to Altuve augmented by the fact that he knew Altuve was available, in town, and not with the team? TBH, Luhnow didn't even have to do that... he's not going to consult with his players for every questionable move/trade.
Players this good this young with this much control rarely, if ever ,are available and the only reason why Luhnow were able to get Osuna was because he hit his woman otherwise he would be untouchable.
They may not be. Do they have to be? Do you think this in any way will affect how they play while they're both under contract for the next 4-5 years? Keuchel wasn't ok with not making a move at the deadline last year. He proceeded to get worse after they did eventually make a move.
