Absolutely nothing other then they're a good team. Well 7 the next 12 are vs the Mariners. Not sure that's the better time to go cold

Still have plenty of time to get healthy

3 hypotheticals that would result in my perfect playoff roster:

    Astros get:
    OF Shin-Soo Choo
    $10M

    Rangers get:
    RHP Akeem Bostick

Choo is having an excellent year and would fit great in the bottom of Houston’s order. He’s an on base machine and can play a passable LF. He comes with a low prospect cost due to his salary and represents a multi-year solution. Alternatives: Jose Abreu, Nick Castellanos, Derek Dietrich, Wil Myers, Jorge Soler, Andrew McCutcheon, Adrian Beltre, Josh Donaldson

    Astros get:
    C JT Realmuto

    Marlins get:
    OF Kyle Tucker
    RHP Corbin Martin
    RHP David Paulino
    C Max Stassi

Realmuto is producing as the best catcher in the game. They’d have him for 3 playoffs. They will need a catcher this offseason since Maldonado and McCann are free agents and both are not starting caliber players. Max Stassi has gone cold. Tucker is a potential star and core player, and Martin is also an excellent prospect, but that’s the cost of adding controllable superstar talent. If they don’t get Realmuto there really aren’t any other available upgrades to McCann/Maldonado/Stassi. Also, adding Realmuto would reduce/eliminate the need to add an OF bat since he would fit in the middle of the order and really stretch the lineup.

    Astros get:
    RHP Raisel Iglesias

    Reds get:
    LHP Cionel Perez
    RHP Rogelio Armenteros
    RHP Jairo Solis
    RHP Will Harris

This is mostly a case of “paying for saves” which is usually a bad idea, but in this case it’s the only tangible way to upgrade what is already a full, quality bullpen, since the only thing lacking is a proven closer (although one could argue that’s what Rondon is). It’s a hefty prospect cost but one Houston can stomach due to their existing pitching depth and demonstrated ability to continue to identify and develop pitchers. Alternatives: Kyle Barraclough, Keone Kela, Shane Greene, Fernando Rodney, Sergio Romo, Blake Parker, Jared Hughes, Drew Steckenrider, Kirby Yates, Craig Stammen

    Resulting playoff roster:

    CF Springer
    3B Bregman
    2B Altuve
    SS Correa
    C Realmuto
    1B Gurriel
    LF Choo
    DH Gattis
    RF Reddick
    Bench: Marwin, McCann, Maldonado, Marisnick
    Rotation: Verlander, Cole, Keuchel, McCullers
Bullpen: McHugh, Peacock, Pressly, Sipp, Devenski, Rondon, Iglesias, Morton

I don't get all the fuss over Iglesias. Will freaking Harris has been better this year. Better FIP, better xFIP, better K/9, better BB/9. Iglesias BABiP is super low and his LOB% is sky high. Not saying that Harris has better stuff or is more valuable, just using him for context.

And because of control he will be costly. Hard pass for me on Iglesias unless the Reds are willing to cut a deal.

I'm not sure if it's old news or not but Heyman had Houston as a potential landing spot for Brad Ziegler. But sounded more like a opinion and not a rumor. Also made it like the Cubs and Red Sox were more likely to get him.

This. I still have faith in Rondon as closer (at least through the regular season) even after last night. And yes, I've been saying that Iglesias's numbers are nothing to be excited about. It's no coincidence that he's still available and Herrera, Hand, Britton, etc. are not.
Also this. We can't afford to take on a massive, long-term contract and just eat it, and even if we could, why the f would we want to bail out the Mall Cops? They made their bed, now they have to lie in it. Realistically, I want to trade for Corey Dickerson of the Pirates, and Tony Watson from the Giants (if they'll trade him, they're 6 GB the second WC).

Iglesias is under contract for $5m/yr thru 2020. And how you value him is determined by sample size and criteria. So yes it is very subjective.

My hypothetical would mean Houston picks up $15m/yr over 2 years. Half of what they signed Josh Reddick for. That’s massive and long-term? Again, .395 OBP.

Better win it this year and next cause you have wiped out all our prospect depth and spent us to where we won't be able to resign the homegrown stars

Thank God you aren't running this ship

Fair point, I don't disagree. He has great stuff, but based on his current season results I would be looking for a price that aligns with "buying low". I don't think the Reds are thinking that way right now.

    Astros Get:

    RHP Josh James

    Astros Get:
    C JT Realmuto

    Marlins Get:
    C Max Stassi
    3B/1B JD Davis
    OF Yordan Alvarez
    RHP Rogelio Armenteros
    SS Freudis Nova

    Astros Get:
    LHP Tony Watson

    Giants Get:
    RHP Dean Deetz
    LHP Reymin Guduan

    Resulting Playoff Roster:

    CF: Springer

Clears up guys from the 40-man who won't see the light of day for new call ups when the rosters expand, adds two new bats, including our future catcher, and shores up lefty relief.

Yordan Alvarez is not getting traded. Astros did not want to trade Alvarez during the Britton Negotiations.
Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, Forrest Whitley are keepers.

lol Drama much? “All our prospect depth”. No. In all 3 hypotheticals I included essentially 3 meaningful prospects: Tucker, Martin, and C Perez. The position player side would still feature Alvarez, Beer, and Nova. The pitching side would be led by Bukauskas and Schroeder and still have really really good depth.

“Spent us to where we won’t be able to resign the homegrown stars”. No. The only significant money taken on is Choo, who I have Texas sending $10M to help offset. Realmuto is on arbitration salaries, Iglesias is making $5M/year thru 2020. Choo would require $15m this year and $15M next. If you think $15M is goin to be the difference between Houston being able to sign one of Correa/Springer/Bregman and not, you have no understanding of how mlb payrolls work.

I trust Luhnow, and yes I agree he is infinitely more qualified to run the team than me. But you’re an idiot.

Not bad, but I think that’s a huge overpay for Dickerson and pretty big underpay for Realmuto.

    Alvarez for Trout, Parker, Pujols

Crane can suck it up and pay Pujols contract so that we can pick up Trout and pen help

Tucker, Martes, Nova, Straw for Realmuto and Steckenrider

Bukauskas, Martin and Kemp for Harper and Herrera

Whitley and Fisher for Archer and Duffy

    Springer
    Bregman
    Trout
    Altuve
    Correa
    Harper
    Realmuto
    Yuli
    Gattis

Pujols, Duffy, Maldanado, Reddick for your bench

    Verlander
    Cole
    Morton
    Archer
    Keuchel

    McCullers
    Herrera
    Steckenrider
    Rondon
    Pressly
    Giles
    Peacock

Devo and Harris and Sipp can be cut cause we are simply too talented to keep around chumps like them
