Obviously, analyzing the trade from the perspective of whoever gets Kawhi is about risk (unless its an LA team)

From the Spurs side though, seems the majority of the buzz is that not only is this not likely the best deal Pops could/should have gotten, but it's not the best Toronto deal that many thought he'd get.

I think being in another country is the main reason. We've also had a history of being a pretty bad franchise up until recently.

He’s on the Butler all star level. The 3rd tier of stars. I think Pop will help his game... but can we say the Spurs have 2 of the most bleh all stars ever? Derozan and Aldridge.

What is this the Milwaukee Bucks ? (Vin Baker and Glenn Robinson) :)

Tax difference, from what I understand, is a significant factor. Also that endorsement deals tend to be larger stateside, but I have no firm data on that.

By the way, I think the main reason D.D. is having a hissy fit about loyalty is that he is seeing his whole career flash before his eyes as he moves from the cupcake conference to the manly man conference. LOL. (And still having to face Lebron to boot. Ha.)

Definitely, though even now I would still love to have Aldridge on the Rocks.

these guys gotta play somewhere. not everyone is built to be in those upper tiers. these two just happen to be in SA now. its better than stacking more of them on GS or giving them to LAbron for free

As far as I'm concerned he quit on that team last year. That was pathetic and now whining about where he is being traded to. You're getting 20+ million dollars to play for a contender for 1 year and will have a boatload of money and a choice of your destination next year, suck it up and play in Toronto.

It's definitely not the haul the Lakers rumors suggested, but it's actually similar to the value Indiana got for George who was "destined" to eventually leave.

Wait, is there an actually new quote of Kawhi saying he doesn't like the trade? Or is the media just recited previous "statements" prior to any trade about preferred destinations?

Lot of pages to wade through. Any help appreciated.

On paper this sounds like a DeRozan for Kawhi deal. But I think the reality is that this is a DeRozan salary dump. Raptors are trying to rebuild and know DeRozan isn't the future. His contract was a big albatross. They don't care if Leonard doesn't play. It was just cover to dump DeRozan's contract.

And as for Leonard, I am so disappointed in him. He was one of my favorite players but the way everything unfolded has perhaps irreversibly damaged his reputation. He had this image as a professional, no nonsense, low key, no maintenance player. But it turns out that he is one of the biggest divas in the NBA. If he sits out in Toronto, I hope Raptors invoke Clause 11.3 on him and dock his pay while also preventing him from signing with another team in 2019-2020 season.

As long as he's not paid while sitting out, he can sit out if he wants to

So the reality that DeRozan is known to be upset, that the four-time All-Star is not only angry at the Raptors for the way they doubled back on their word but unhappy about joining the Spurs, is no small thing. And talk about timing: DeRozan and Leonard are on the list of players invited to the Team USA training camp at UNLV that starts next Wednesday and runs through Friday, with none other than Popovich himself coaching the national team for the very first time. It’s unclear if DeRozan will attend, but Leonard was considered likely to attend before this deal went down.

As NBA personalities go, the 28-year-old DeRozan is as measured and mature as they come. And as one person close to him reminded USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday, he takes great pride in being a true professional. But he’s also a top-tier player in his prime who has every reason to be furious.

The specifics of DeRozan’s ire toward the Raptors aren’t hard to understand. Not only was he told at Las Vegas summer league earlier this month that he wouldn’t be traded, but that message – according to a person with knowledge of the talks – came at the very same time and location where the Raptors were gathering intelligence on Leonard for this eventual deal. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity surrounding the situation.

That's a lot of money to give up just to not play. I suspect he'll have his doctor say he isn't healthy while Spurs and/or NBA doctors will say otherwise. Then we might have nasty litigation as Raptors try to invoke CBA Clause 11.3 and deny him pay while Leonard fights it.
