Hood should probably take the QO and play in unrestricted free agent waters next summer.

Honestly, I think that is what he should do too. He is going to get minutes in Cleveland. He can build up his game. It is at an all time low now. There will be more cap room and teams next summer. After the first wave hits, he could get a decent offer in the second wave of the teams that missed out.

Agree. No reason he can't raise his value to the MLE with a season as the #1 or 2 ball handler in Cleveland.

Rodney Hood seems to Only want a fair short-term deal, but Cleveland has not put what Hood feels is an acceptable offer on the table and contract talKs have stalled, pEr sources familiar with the negoTiation. #CavS

but he has no leverage, right? he's got to take the QO or whatever Cleveland is offering long-term, right? His QO might be more than our MLE.

So basically, there is no way houston can get this guy. why is he even a topic in the rockets forum?

I don't get it. What is so good about Hood? Besides the the fact that he's terrible (e.g. two consecutive offseason with ORPM of -5.5; consistently mediocre on defense), guy's got an attitude issue.

Why do you guys want a poison like this? Just why....

I believe his QO is ~$3.5 MM. After signing Hartenstein, we have ~$4.5 MM left of our MLE. But I imagine that we've earmarked a share of that (same $800k as Hartenstein) for Melton as well, which would leave us $3.7 MM to offer Hood.

I don't know why Hood would accept that. Maybe we convince him that he'd shine in our offense for one year and get a big deal next year. But even if that's true, why wouldn't the Cavs immediately match that offer?

Would require some back-room scheming (i.e. give Cavs some cash/incentive via another transaction to not match our offer to Hood). But Hood isn't worth circumventing the cap like that.

Seems like DM would rather save the $3.7 million or so for buyouts down the line. I mean Rodney Hoods playing 100% a role is probably better than any buyout guy would be, but as you note, doesn't make much sense for him anyway. Plus, when it comes buyout time, it might be more clear what the Rockets more specifically need role wise.

I personally believe that Hood is more valuable than anyone that would be in the buyout market midseason, especially considering that he'd get a training camp to integrate himself onto the team.

If he's willing to sign a $3.7 MM deal, I have to believe Morey would be all over that. But that's a huge IF.

Completely agree with you here. My point was that if Hood is willing to sign at $3.7 MM, you sign him to that offer sheet. There's not going to be a buyout candidate that will help us more than Hood.

Hood is a decent defender at 6’8” that shot just under 39% from beyond the arc and averaged 17 ppg in Utah... that’s why you sign him. I don’t know what happened in Cleveland but the talent level is there. He’s only 25, and probably needs to mature, but he could solidify the SF position for now. Also, the whole situation when he didn’t enter the game was blown way out of proportion by the media. It was freakin’ garbage time. Yeah, hindsight you enter the game but he wasn’t playing well so he deferred to another player on the bench. Regardless, the Rockets need a SF and he’s capable of being a good player. If he signed on the cheap... great! There are no other FA’s worth a crap that the Rockets can afford. At the very least he could be used as a future trade chip to bring in another SF down the road.

Unless something has drastically changed in the last 24 hours, Rodney Hood is not going to the Rockets.
