I love Elon Musk, and everything he has done, but honestly I wouldn't want him to use this opportunity for his products and technology as means of advertisement. Too many lives at risk This story has been crazy from the getgo. So glad 8 have been rescued safely. Also thought they were going to wait this out longer, similar to the months it took to get the Chilean miners out. Happy to see how quickly they are moving
And I've heard they don't really need to swim, as they can walk/crawl underground, with the scuba gear. Most of the way is not that deep.
How do these kids survive over 2 weeks without food or water? I can’t imagine going 2 days without food let alone 2 hrs without water.
They have it now but the main key is their coach. He's a former monk and taught the kids how to meditate to conserve energy and keep calm.
I am sure there is water. The cave is full of it. It might not be clean, but when its either dirty water or death I am sure you will drink it. The human body can go without food for 3 or more weeks without food.
Look at a map of Thailand, Buck. If the boys were from the surrounding area, it wouldn't be unusual not to be able to swim, in my opinion. It's in the far north of Thailand, close to Burma and Laos.
They were discovered about a week and a half after they disappeared and started getting "liquid food " almost immediately. They also have a doctor and nurse that have stayed with them since they were found
fwiw: On NPR last week, they interviewed a (the?) leading authority on cave rescues in the US (with 100s under his belt). He said lack of swimming is not a big deal with scuba rescues in caves, because you aren't really swimming vs crawling/walking on the underwater surface...and when you do, kicking with fins and rescuers holding/pulling you, doing most the work, suffices. It's having to learn to trust the scuba gear that concerns him more, but he did add, inability to swim can lead to anxiety and panic. But they don't need them to swim. The divers need them to not panic and trust them and the equipment.
Region is crawling with streams and rivers outside of the coast ya know. I just always find it odd. Not that it has any real bearing in this situation.
They could be the national jr swim team. Cave diving is an entirely different ball of disorientation and claustrophobia. An expert diver already croaked.
It's definitely a skill everyone should have. Our two kids took lessons. It's difficult to be a Texan and not know how to swim, so I get your point. Brought up on the Gulf Coast and sailing on Galveston Bay, or fishing at a host of places, then later spending a few decades here in Central Texas surrounded by lakes? Being able to swim is a must, or should be.
Stupid question but how did they get trapped in the first place? Did they go in when it was dry and then it started flooding? I'm not seeing how they came to be in the cave from any current stories and I'm admittedly late to the story.
