I really am fine with this. While it does put keeping Capela long term at risk, it also creates the possibility of being a player in free agency next year. That's not to say that they will actually clear the deck to make this a reality, but the threat of it can get teams to play ball with you in a trade.
If he takes the qo he can't even be traded without his consent, that alone would already be an obstacle, add that he would be expiring and yeah...not even sure he would maintain his bird rights in this scenario, but maybe i'm confusing this with another thing now...
They are not going to be a player in FA next year. QO isn't good. The Rockets would be better served either coming to an agreement with Capela OR start to canvas teams for S&T options to get assets back for Capela. Capela playing on the QO and then leaving in FA is wasting an asset. Something this team in contention absolutely can't do. I am fine with Morey not wanting to overpay. But if he pivots, he needs to obtain assets.
Someone more well informed knows the answer to this question (@BimaThug), but is there any financial or transactional/process reason to delay the re-signings of CC and Luc? Like is there any team benefit to delay?
Oh ok thanks. In any case, it remains a bad situation for us, if we are not willing to pay him what he wants now, i don't see how this changes in one a year, and we'll not be able to control him anyway.
Clint’s delay is because he’s probably been told to find a better long-term deal (not the QO) than what Morey has offered. He can’t find one because teams with cap to offer max don’t need a center like him, and teams that need him can’t offer him what he has on the table (speculation on my part) Not sure about Luc. Considering he’s been open about coming back, my guess is he’s going to split the MLE with Melo. Just waiting on Melo’s buyout to determine what that exact figure is. If Luc has 5 teams offering him what he’s looking for, then why hasn’t he signed with one of them?
CC isn't going to play for the qualifying offer. Wants emotions settle he will realize that its not worth risking his career if he gets hurt. He gets by on athletic ability. If he has a major injury he won't get paid.
No..... doesn't mean you overpay... Clint and his camp want the MAX? Well then he can take the QO this year and risk injury and all that good stuff. Without James he is a mediocore center in the NBA, the sooner they realize that, the sooner we can get a deal done. Overvaluation is going to be very determinantal to Clint... just see Noel from last year. 4/$60 mil max... and i wouldn't give a penny more..... and even then i would be kind of hesitant. Clutchfans needs to wise up.... we already gave a very bad contract out once in Anderson.. why repeat that again? Rockets and DM have seemed to wise up on that front. Good job.
People are interested/worried about Melo coming here, but if we're going to lose Capela and Luc next season is going to be really really ugly, i can still manage to be somehow positive, or at least not that negative (lol) because of this
Eh.. i agree... but DJ will be a FA next year.... and i already like him over capela for this team. We will be golden any way it goes.
Of course, but if he was locked into a reasonable deal we wouldn't be having this conversation now, would we?
Tilman has had a terrible start to this off-season, it's just started but that's why I said bad start. He also has lien issues off the court that I cannot imagine make him too thrilled. The idea that he's off to a bad start is that Ariza bounced within minutes of free agency (don't you dare try to minimize his importance last year, it's fine that you feel he was overpaid, but he was a key part of the chemistry to the locker room). Luc is still not under contract. CC seems angry at the process. These are bad things to start the off-season. CP3 is a star and we paid above his four year value, but I get why we did it. I'm in the camp that a deal will get done with Clint in the 4/68 or 5/85 range and both sides will feel bad about it. Cyber hasn't really had a lot of good news for us lately. I do not believe Clint is mediocre without Harden or CP3 and I think comparing him to Anderson is a futile attempt to simply an overly nuanced scenario. Clint is 24. Clint has improved every year. There is no reason to think he won't continue to do so. DJ is no guarantee next year. Teams will have cap room and I don't see him taking a hometown discount.
You can still pay Capela next year. And I'm not necessarily advocating for creating room for free agency next year...I'm arguing for having the threat of it. That could be valuable if you're negotiating with someone like the Wolves for Butler.
You can still pay him...if he's willing to be here, which is unlikely i'd say, i mean, why would you not pay him now just to pay him next summer when waiting one year also adds the risk of losing him? And risk is not exactly the right word here, cause he'll leave 99% if we "force" him to sign the qo imo.
