No one's following this?? https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/08/asia/thai-cave-rescue-mission-intl/index.html Tham Luang caves, Thailand (CNN)Four of the 12 boys who have been trapped in a flooded cave in northern Thailand for more than two weeks have been rescued, as the operation was put on hold overnight to allow oxygen tanks to be refilled. The mission to free the remaining members of the group has been suspended for at least 10 hours, Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said, as teams replenish supplies used up removing the first four boys.
This has been crazy -- I can't believe the Navy Seal died shows how insanely dangerous cave diving is even for experts. The heavy rains and decreasing 02 forced them to move forward immediately.
Once this is all complete the focus is going to come down hard on that coach for taking the boys so far back in those caves.
Exactly i was asking myself this question. According to the BBC they went too the caves to celebrate one of the teens birthday and apparently went too deep in the caves, especially considering the weather conditions. I would expect the adult supervisor to stop them from doing this
I assumed that while they went passed the signs, they didn't go that far until the rains forced them further and further? Or is that incorrect? Crazy thing though. I hope they all make it out alive. Also, any idea why they didn't use Musk's idea of a mini submersible? Time constraints?
Reports vary on how far back in the cave they were -- what i've heard is 100 yard up to 1 kilometer the maps make it look closer to the kilometer estimate. There wasn't time to use Musk's idea, but while i'm sure he was actually designing something it seemed like Musk getting some free airtime with good intentions.
From what I've heard some of the required passages are very tight -- tough for experienced divers and I would assume impossible for any submersible larger than what Ant-man could come up with.
I heard the caves weren't closed off yet for monsoon season, but it came early and trapped the kids in. The rising water forced them to go further into the caves. Kinda hard to pin the blame on the adults unless there were obvious warnings that they ignored, and very unfortunate for everyone involved. RIP to the SEAL that died, and hopefully all the kids and rescuers make it out alive.
2.5 miles according to this and I heard someone say 2 miles on TV. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/thailand-soccer-team-rescue_us_5b4168cae4b09e4a8b2dcd33 The other lengths are probably how long the sections are that require them to dive. That article says "more than half a mile". They dive them walk dive again etc.
Ya I think they are 2.4 miles in from the entrance of the cave. Even at walking pace on a flat surface, that's 50 mins! Imaging diving with tanks...
https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/thai-cave-rescue-live-intl/index.html They resume the rescue operation. im Hoping to hear good news
I believe there are 2 spots where the divers have to take their tanks off to fit through. Also, exclusive photo of Musk's proposed submersible: Spoiler
8 safely rescued so far. The Musk pod is actually quite impressive although I don’t see it getting any PT https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/07/08/us/elon-musk-thai-cave-rescue/index.html
I don't think that is the case with them but I was just speaking of pure fear. If something goes wrong with a mask the pros can get it off and give you a regulator pretty quickly. A few minutes and you are fine. Something goes wrong in a prototype coffin and you a f'ed.
