If he is going to join the Lakers, he'd do it as a free agent, correct? So if he lets the deadline pass and doesn't opt in, then he will not be joining the Rockets, correct?

If he opts in, then he won't be joining the Lakers, right?

    Or is that all wrong?

What will we know and when will we know it?

Good question. I mean is it really unlikely that Cleveland and the Lakers couldn't construct a deal for picks and assets to secure Lebron? Everything we've been hearing is that the lakers could construct a skeleton team around lebron and two other superstars. Apparently that team would also be strong enough to beat the warriors.

If he opts in, it doesn't mean we'll get him, but it improves our chances of it happening to like maybe ~20%.
If he doesn't opt in, it means we have like a 2% chance to trade for him.

Stevie Wonder in his James Harden outfit

525 minutes 600 hours till Lebron James sign. How do you measure what he will do for the Rockets? In Championship, In Title, Not one , not 2, not 3....How about TITLES

I dont see him opting in just so the lakers can give assets to trade for him, considering they also have to trade for kawhi which looks like they will have to give up abunch so i doubt he goes to LA which would give us the best shot outside of cleveland in my opinion, probably 60% cleveland 30%HOU and 10% philly if i had to guess.

Still I dream Lebron will come to Houston, but it's a dream that can never be and in the Summer he left us

well if he doesn't opt in, it means he will go to either Lakers or Philly (more likely Lakers).

if he opts in, he can go to Cleveland, Houston or San Antonio.

All signs points that he's ending up on the Lakers. IMO, it's a terrible choice for him regarding his legacy because it will be ruined when he can't beat the Warriors until he retires. He's more likely going there for the money off the court. He wants to own a team in the future which means he needs to become a multi billionaire for that to happen.

Also his kids and wife probably would love to live in LA and I'm sure they don't care about his legacy of beating Jordan in rings over their own happiness.

I feel dumb for asking, but I thought it was 6/30...

Edit: I was thinking of the first day of free agency. Tomorrow he has to opt in or opt out, which could be a clue as to what our odds are by the 30th.

“The first big plot point in the third installment of the LeBron James free agency trilogy will be resolved by 12:01 a.m. on June 29. That’s the deadline for LeBron to decide whether to opt out of the final year of his contract and officially join the free agent party.”

Thank god. After our best season in 20+ years it would suck to have the offseason relegated to a Lebron D riding contest. Thank god that will be short lived and we can get back to reality and the business of improving what was the best team in the west last year.

If Lebron chooses to NOT opt in to the final year of his deal and become a FA, then that would probably kill any chance of him becoming a Rocket.

If he opts-in to the final year of his deal, then all options are still open to him.

From a pure flexibility perspective, opting in makes more sense (assuming that CLE will be willing to get something back for him. If he went this route, that discussion would have already occurred) as all teams would still be in play.

If he's already decided that he wants to go to one of the teams with cap space (LA or Philly), then the flexibility doesn't matter and and becoming a FA and signing directly is a smarter play.

Basically, not opting end is bad for Houston. Opting in still gives us a chance but doesn't really eliminate anyone.
