More importantly they still have your Argentina. They sure as heck were thrilled to see Argentina advance over Nigeria yesterday. They love the big teams and big stars but hey big ratings.
I think FS1/FOX commentary has been pretty apathetic and boring throughout the entire tournament. They have reacted the same way after every game from what I've seen. Alexi Lalas has been trying to drum up excitement for 2 weeks and nothing.
Germany needs to breed some strikers. There are a couple of things to blame including shaky defense and individual mistakes but their biggest problem is that they had no goal scorers. They could have scored a handful today with a good striker up front. So many good opportunities missed by Gomez, Werner, Hummels... Muller is done. Trash in both Euros and now this WC. Kimmich....so many mistakes. Just a really bad team performance. No one to blame but themselves.
I can't even fully describe how I feel after this match. Sorry German brehs, the part of me that's an England fan is thrilled with this result but I never thought it would really happen. I thought South Korea were better than they showed in the first two matches and could come out and play a remarkable game today and take the lead or something but never in my wildest dreams did I think Germany wouldn't come back and score a goal or two and win the match. Unbelievable. Unbelievable!
I feel for Hummels. He had a match much like Mehdi Benatia vs Portugal. Chance after chance in front of goal (In Hummels case it was headers which should be meat and drink to him, whereas Benatia had the ball on his foot). Leroy Sane is on a beach somewhere cracking a smile probably!
Argentina advancing and germany losing...wohoo! Ok fine..i am still bitter about losing to germany in the 2002 quarter finals. but i do love german cars. lol
Just saw this post. Dude, you can't actually say it meant more for the Argentinian people and team than it did for Nigeria. You're only seeing the Argentinian side. Both countries are dealing with imperfect political and economical situations but Nigerian people are dealing with two different types of Islamic militants killing people in their country. Add in an ineffective government in dealing with that crap and you better believe a World Cup match involving their team is a huge break from the bad news they hear frequently regarding that stuff. Then, add in the fact that Argentina and Nigeria had met in 5 of the last 6 world cups involving both teams and each time Argentina eked out a victory by a single goal. Imagine losing to the same team (group stage or R16) by a single goal for FIVE straight times! Then you get in position to knock them out and advance over them...but lose in the last few minutes. Nah, it definitely meant a lot to the Nigerian people and team and getting the draw to advance would've meant just as much or more than it did for the Argentinians.
Last time Germany was knocked out in the 1st round was 1938. I hope they handle their disappointment a bit better this time around.
Most dramatic group stage in WC history? For me it is and i started watching in 1990... Off-topic but why does clutch sports/e-sports have its own section but soccer doesn't? Seriously?
The only German player throughout the entire tournament that looked promising was Julian Brandt. He should've gotten into today's match the moment that Sweden scored their second goal. Anyways, I am loving the chaos of this World Cup. I feel for my German relatives, but they'll bounce back and they got to enjoy 2014. I really hope we see a "new" team - Belgium, England, Uruguay, etc. (ie, have never won or haven't in decades) - win the whole thing.
I can because the people of Nigeria have bigger problems than a football game. I agree that in the history of Nigerian football this would be a major milestone but in relativity you can't make the argument that if Brazil nearly advances it doesn't mean as much as say Iceland advancing.
what the hell just happened... at least germany know exactly what they need to develop for the next world cup. 4 years is plenty of time.
Again, your point is unprovable. It's a weird thing to dig your heels in on. The Nigerian players looked heartbroken at the end of the match, but there's a quantifiable way to say their sadness was less profound than Argentina's joy? C'mon, man.
