He and his twin brother, Anthony, were the youngest of seven children. He also studied aviation mechanics at East New York Vocational High School, graduating in June, 1945. He worked as a lifeguard at Coney Island and swam for the Flatbush Boys Club. He was a standout on his high school swim team, also playing on the school's baseball and track teams. He went on to study at Ohio State University on an athletic scholarship. He was part of the university's swim team that won the United States National Championships. After two years at Ohio State, he transferred to the University of Hawaii where he spent much time training as a swimmer for the Olympics. He was also involved in theater productions. Edwards studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; his classmates included Anne Bancroft, John Cassavetes, and Grace Kelly. In 1950, he was signed to a contract by Paramount Pictures, making his film debut as "Vincent Edwards" in 1951's Mister Universe and then played the lead actor the following year in Hiawatha. Although he had major or lead roles in several films, including the film noirs The Killing (1956) and Murder by Contract (1958), it was not until he was featured in the title character on the highly successful Ben Casey television series that he achieved a level of stardom. The medical drama show, which he occasionally directed, ran from 1961 to 1966. As a result of the show's and his own popularity, Edwards also released several music albums and appeared in the all-star war film The Victors in 1963. He was represented by one of Hollywood's first "super agents", Abby Greshler of Diamond Artists in Hollywood. (1963) When the Ben Casey television series ended, Edwards returned to acting in motion pictures with a major role in the 1968 war drama The Devil's Brigade, together with films such as Hammerhead (1968), The Desperados (1969), and The Mad Bomber (1973). In 1983, he played the main protagonist, Hawk, in the sci-fi film Space Raiders. He continued to act in film as well as in guest spots on television, including roles in The Rhinemann Exchange (1977), Evening in Byzantium (1978), and the pilot episode of Knight Rider, Knight Of The Phoenix in 1982. He directed a number of episodes in a variety of television series including the original Battlestar Galactica. Some twenty-two years after the series ended, Edwards returned to television as Dr. Ben Casey in 1988. He made his last film, The Fear, in 1995. After the filming he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Edwards suffered for many years from compulsive gambling, acknowledging to longtime friend, director William Friedkin that he had "sacrificed a good portion of his career to an addiction." In his last years, Edwards and his wife, Janet, attempted to educate others about the dangers of gambling. After his death, his wife remarked: "One of the messages that Vince wanted to share is that gambling is NOT glamorous, despite today's suave-sounding euphemisms, such as 'gaming.'" Edwards died of pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles, California, on March 11, 1996; he was buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

A consensus top-150 prospect in the high school class of 2014, Edwards emerged as an instant contributor for Matt Painter’s Boilermakers averaging 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game as a true freshman. Showed marked development as a jump shooter as a sophomore, served as more of a playmaker as a junior, and made strides as a rebounder as a senior. Edwards was a key part of four NCAA Tournament teams filling a variety of different roles. Edwards averaged 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game as a senior earning All-Big Ten Second Team honors while helping Purdue to a top-3 AP ranking and a Sweet 16 appearance. Father, Bill Edwards, was a similarly versatile forward who played in the NBA briefly after going undrafted out of Wright State and had a long, highly productive career across a half dozen top-tier leagues in Europe. Edwards was listed at 6’8 with a 225-pound frame as a senior and has a wingspan of just over 7-feet. Has solid size for a combo forward and though not overwhelmingly quick or explosive, possesses nice leaping ability off two feet and a strong frame. Played a significant role for all four of his seasons at Purdue. Though never serving as the team’s first option, Edwards grew into a highly efficient role player whose versatility was put to good use. Was most prolific as a floor spacer this season posting impressive 3-point shooting numbers outside of a February slump, but also regularly attacked mismatches from the inside and out from the power forward position, made shots at a nice rate out of off screen actions, generated some points on the offensive glass with his hustle, and even served as both the ball handler and the roll man in the pick & roll on a near-nightly basis. Played a uniquely well-rounded role for a college forward for one of the nation’s most efficient offensive teams. Finished as the Boilermakers’ third leading scorer, but also led the team in rebounding and ranked second in assists. PlayType Analysis Did much of his best work as a set shooter last season, but has never been particularly aggressive hunting jumpers. 29% of his shots in the half court last season were catch and shoot jumpers which he converted for 1.326 points per catch and shoot attempt [92ndpercentile]. Made shots with great accuracy with his feet set except for a short stint during Big Ten play. Has pretty fluid, but slightly unorthodox, shooting mechanics that are on the slow side. Has shot right around 40% from beyond the arc on 3.5 attempts per game and 83% from the foul line since the start of his sophomore year. Has plenty of promise as a floor spacing power forward. Was far more than just a spot up threat as a senior. Got almost 30% of his possessions from a combination of Post Ups and Isolations as his quickness was an issue for more traditional big men and his strength was an advantage against many small-ball fours at the NCAA level. Not the quickest or shiftiest slasher, but can attack closeouts and take what defenders give him off the dribble. Has room to grow as a decision-maker attacking the rim coughing the ball up at times when his driving angles got closed off. Scored 0.395 points per pull-up jump shot in the half court [6th percentile] as a senior despite making floaters and shots off of jab steps with good range and accuracy. Ability to develop as a threat off the dribble could make it easier for him to pick and choose his spots. May not be overly fast to turn the corner, but has nice touch around the rim to convert shots from awkard angles when he does get inside. Generates quite a few shots around the rim by staying active off the ball. Makes some hustle plays crashing in from the perimeter and cuts intelligently off of post ups and dribble penetration. Scored 1.225 points per shot around the rim [69th percentile] finishing with both hands and showed the ability able to play above the rim when given some room to operate. Fluid, coordinated offensive player with a nice feel for the game. Reads the floor well passing from the perimeter and elbows. Makes the extra pass regularly and has eagerly filled different roles as Purdue’s personnel shifted in a major way throughout his career. Ranked 5th in the Big Ten in Isolation scoring (2.0 ppg) Defensive Analysis Versatility extends to the defensive end as well. Regularly guarded multiple positions as a senior as Purdue switched many actions. Plays with nice discipline both on and off the ball, but has room to be more aggressive. Doesn’t miss a lot of rotations, helps actively, and seldom misses a chance to get a hand up in the eyeline of opposing shooters. Had some good moments moving his feet on the perimeter, but also got beat to the rim in spots not always anticipating against creative slashers. Allowed 0.632 points per Isolation possession [75th percentile] and 0.417 points per Post Up possession [97th percentile]. Not the most imposing interior defender against more polished back-to-the-basket scorers, but goes straight up on shots in close contesting with good timing. Makes second efforts for loose balls. Ability to maximize his frame to stretch all the positive things he does defensively at the next level is a point of interest.
