The most recent two years seem to have really separated Ronaldo from Messi in the GOAT (of this era) debate. Winning the Euro and the opening match of this World Cup vs. Spain stand in stark contrast to how poor Messi has been with Argentina in the same timespan.
What a downfall... Albiceleste really have to question themselves. Not attacking Modric before the second goal - and what was that on the third? Just stop playing and call for offside? When the goal difference could become crucial later on? As weird as it sounds, Argentina still has solid chances to reach the 2nd place, especially if Iceland and Nigeria draw tomorrow. Argentina is favored against Nigeria and even though the Croatians probably will rest some players against Iceland, they still have a good enough team to win all three games.
