Since they don't have the right to be in the country, they can't come and go as they please and since it has now become popular for people to attempt to exploit the system they don't have room for everyone and it's a more efficient use of space to split them up. People crossing the border has nothing to do with separating children from their families. People have been crossing the border for decades, this new tactic only started recently.
